What is a remote billing specialist?

A Remote Billing Specialist is a professional responsible for managing billing processes and invoices for a company or organization while working from a remote location, such as their home. Their main duties typically include preparing and sending invoices, processing payments, resolving billing discrepancies, and maintaining accurate financial records. They often work with accounting software and coordinate with clients or internal teams to ensure timely billing. Strong attention to detail and good communication skills are essential for this role. Remote Billing Specialists enable organizations to efficiently handle their billing operations without requiring on-site staff.

What does a remote billing specialist do?

As a remote billing specialist, you work from home or another location outside of your employer’s office, and your job duties vary depending on the industry in which you specialize. You typically work for a company or business to prepare invoices and bills, monitor incoming payments and outstanding financial debts, and manage patient files. You also interact with patients, personnel, and insurance companies by phone and email to set up repayment options and discuss accounts. In the insurance industry, your responsibilities include accepting claims submissions and processing payments or denials. As a medical billing specialist, you also submit information to health insurers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote billing specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Billing Specialist, you need strong attention to detail, proficiency in accounting or finance principles, and often an associate degree or relevant experience in billing or bookkeeping. Familiarity with billing software (such as QuickBooks, SAP, or medical billing systems), spreadsheet tools, and sometimes certification like Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) is typically required. Excellent organizational skills, clear communication, and the ability to work independently are vital soft skills for remote success. These competencies ensure accurate invoicing, timely payments, and effective collaboration with clients and internal teams in a remote environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote billing specialists and how can they be addressed?

Remote Billing Specialists often encounter challenges such as time zone differences with clients or team members, maintaining data accuracy across multiple systems, and ensuring clear communication without face-to-face interaction. To address these, it's important to establish a consistent daily routine, use reliable billing software, and leverage collaboration tools like video calls and shared document platforms. Regular check-ins with team members and staying updated on industry compliance standards can also help maintain accuracy and efficiency in the role.

Job description

Remote Dental Billing Specialist

Company Overview

Dental Claim Support (DCS) is a specialized dental revenue cycle management company serving dentists, private practices, and DSOs across the United States. We empower dental teams by combining highly trained RCM experts with a proven technology framework to maximize profitability and support practice growth.

Our systems and processes allow our team to work the full dental revenue cycle efficiently and accurately, helping clients increase collections, reduce aging, and gain confidence in their insurance billing.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a detail-oriented, technically strong Remote Dental Billing Specialist to join our Private Practice Insurance Billing business unit. In this role, you will be a key contributor to our clients’ success by managing the insurance billing lifecycle—from clean claim submission through accurate payment posting and follow-up.

You will work from home as an independent contractor (1099, commission-based) with the potential to transition into a W-2 position. This is a strong career move for someone who wants to deepen their expertise in dental RCM, own measurable outcomes (accuracy, collections, retention), and play a key role in a rapidly growing company.

What You'll Do
  • Manage the full dental revenue cycle for assigned practices, including accurate insurance payment posting, adjustments, and coordination of benefits in line with industry standards and policies.
  • Prepare and submit clean claims daily, resolve rejections and denials promptly, and work aging reports to reduce outstanding insurance balances and increase collections.
  • Use dental practice management software (server or cloud-based), payer portals, and clearinghouses to post EFTs, submit claims, and maximize claim payments while maintaining data integrity.
  • Apply thorough knowledge of CDT coding, insurance verification breakdowns, radiographs, and HIPAA guidelines to ensure compliant, accurate billing and documentation.
  • Partner closely with Account Managers, clients, and vendors to solve revenue cycle issues, improve processes, and provide responsive, professional client service in a remote environment.
What Success Looks Like
  • Maintain a client retention rate of 90% or higher and consistently positive feedback (NPS of 8+ for your book of business) by delivering reliable, proactive billing support.
  • Contribute to revenue targets that reflect an ROI of 67% for your assigned clients through effective claim submission, follow-up, and payment posting.
  • Achieve and sustain at least 98% accuracy in payment posting and adjustments, demonstrated through internal quality checks and audits.
  • Maintain an overall audit score of 90% or higher while meeting deadlines, keeping aging under control, and communicating clearly with clients and internal teams.
What We're Looking For
  • At least 2 years of hands-on dental insurance billing experience, with strong knowledge of dental terminology and effective revenue cycle management techniques.
  • Comfort working in dental practice management software and standard office tools (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook; Google Drive a plus), with the ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Organized, detail-focused professional who communicates clearly, manages multiple priorities, and maintains high accuracy under deadlines.
  • Team-oriented, growth-minded individual who takes ownership, solves problems proactively, and is committed to professional excellence and client success.
Compensation and Benefits
  • 1099 – Independent Contractor, based on commission, with the opportunity to transition to W-2 status.
  • Remote / work-from-home with a flexible work schedule and a culture of learning.
  • Once eligible for W-2 status: health, vision, and dental coverage; company-matched 401(k); company-provided equipment; and paid time off.
  • Opportunity to play a key role in a rapidly growing company that values customer success, transparency, reliability, professional excellence, and alignment.
How to Apply

If you have solid dental insurance billing experience and want to grow your career in a remote, high-accountability environment, please submit your resume and a brief note describing your dental billing background and practice management systems you have used.
