Job description

PRIMARY FUNCTION 

The Senior BI Engineer will design, develop, and support the enterprise BI and analytics platform, delivering scalable and high-performance reporting solutions across clinical, operational, and financial domains. This role is responsible for building and optimizing end-to-end BI solutions, including data modeling, semantic layer development, and dashboard delivery, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and performance across all reporting assets. 

The role will design and implement star/snowflake schema data models, develop reusable data marts, and define standardized business metrics to support a governed analytics framework. The Senior BI Engineer will build and maintain Power BI solutions, including DAX measures, Power Query transformations, and optimized data models, while ensuring efficient query performance and scalable report design. 

This position will work closely with data engineering, application teams, and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into technical BI solutions. Responsibilities include writing advanced SQL queries and optimizing reporting datasets for performance and usability. 

The Senior BI Engineer will also enforce BI development standards, support data governance initiatives, and contribute to the establishment of a unified semantic layer to enable consistent and trusted reporting across the organization. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Design and develop enterprise BI solutions using Power BI, including scalable dashboards and reporting models.  

  1. Build and maintain dimensional data models (star/snowflake schemas) and reusable datasets for enterprise reporting.  

  1. Develop and optimize semantic models with standardized business definitions, KPIs, and measures.  

  1. Write advanced SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, and reporting logic.  

  1. Develop complex DAX measures and Power Query (M) transformations to support analytical requirements.  

  1. Design and implement advanced Power BI visualizations, including drill-through reports, dynamic tooltips, decomposition trees, key influencers, field parameters, What-If analysis, and paginated reports.  

  1. Develop advanced interactive visuals such as custom visuals (e.g., Power KPI Visual, xViz Suite, OKViz visuals, Zebra BI visuals), KPI scorecards, waterfall charts, funnel charts, heat maps, trend analysis visuals, and variance analysis dashboards.  

  1. Build highly interactive reporting experiences using bookmarks, buttons, slicer panels, synced slicers, and dynamic page navigation.  

  1. Optimize dashboard performance and user experience through efficient modeling, aggregations, and visualization best practices.  

  1. Translate business requirements into technical BI specifications and end-to-end reporting solutions.  

  1. Enforce BI development standards, naming conventions, and documentation practices.  

  1. Support data governance by ensuring consistency, accuracy, and alignment of enterprise metrics.  

  1. Troubleshoot and resolve BI/reporting issues and ensure data reliability across dashboards.  

  1. Manage Power BI Service administration, including workspace setup, access control, security roles, and capacity utilization.  

  1. Oversee dataset refresh schedules, gateway configurations, and deployment pipelines in Power BI Service.  

  1. Monitor and optimize Power BI environment performance, usage, and governance compliance 

QUALIFICATIONS 

EDUCATION:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Health Informatics, or related field required. 

  • Master’s degree in Data Science, Business Analytics, or a related discipline preferred. 

EXPERIENCE:  

  • 10+ years of experience in BI, Data Analytics, or Data Engineering.  

  • Strong experience with Power BI development and enterprise dashboarding.  

  • Expertise in SQL, data modeling (star/snowflake), DAX, and Power Query.  

  • Experience with Power BI Service administration and deployment.  

  • Proven ability to translate business requirements into scalable BI solutions. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • Strong knowledge of BI concepts and dimensional modeling (star/snowflake)  

  • Advanced Power BI skills (DAX, Power Query, dashboard development)  

  • Strong SQL skills for querying and performance tuning  

  • Experience with Power BI Service administration and deployment  

  • Ability to design scalable, high-performance BI solutions
