What is remote banking?

A Remote Banking job involves providing banking services, customer support, or financial solutions from a remote location, often through online platforms, phone, or chat. Roles can include customer service representatives, fraud analysts, loan officers, or financial advisors. Employees use digital tools to assist customers with transactions, account management, and financial inquiries. This job typically requires strong communication skills, knowledge of banking policies, and proficiency with financial software. Many banks and financial institutions offer remote positions to enhance convenience for both employees and customers.

What skills and qualifications are needed for remote banking?

To excel in Remote Banking, you typically need a background in finance, banking operations, or customer service, often supported by a relevant degree or work experience. Familiarity with digital banking platforms, secure communication tools, and sometimes certification in anti-money laundering (AML) procedures is crucial. Strong communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities help you build trust and resolve client issues efficiently. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure secure transactions, maintain compliance, and deliver excellent customer service in a virtual environment.

What are common challenges in remote banking, and how can they be managed?

One common challenge in remote banking is maintaining secure and clear communication with clients without face-to-face interaction, which means you must rely heavily on digital tools and strict security protocols. Another challenge is staying up to date with rapidly changing banking technologies and regulatory requirements. Effective time management and proactive communication with both clients and team members are key to staying organized and responsive while working remotely. Ongoing professional development and training can help you adapt to new systems and remain compliant with industry standards.

Can you work remotely for a bank?

Remote banking jobs are increasingly available, especially for roles such as customer service, loan processing, and financial advising. These positions often require strong communication skills, familiarity with banking software, and sometimes specific certifications, but many can be performed entirely online with flexible schedules.

The Energy, Infrastructure & Transition (EIT) team provides investment banking services to existing and prospective clients across upstream and midstream energy, renewable and conventional power, utilities, infrastructure, energy transition, and climate technology. With a global coverage strategy spanning North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Australia, we deliver a client-focused approach that combines mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and financial advisory services with access to debt, equity, and loan capital markets, as well as risk management and hedging solutions. As a Director, EIT, Global Investment Banking, you'll play a lead role in supporting clients through complex transactions, including M&A, strategic and capital structure advisory, debt and equity financings, and tax equity transactions. You'll work closely with colleagues across Capital Markets and our global offices to deliver thoughtful, sector-informed advice and execution support. Based in Calgary, this role has a primary sector focus on upstream and midstream energy and offers the opportunity to contribute to a market-leading platform in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. Details on your work arrangement (proportion of on-site and remote work) will be discussed at the time of your interview.

How you'll succeed

  • Client advisory and origination - Support business development and origination efforts by preparing client proposals and contributing ideas for equity and debt financings, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and other advisory mandates. Partner with cross-functional teams across CIBC Capital Markets to support client opportunities and complex transactions.

  • Financial analysis and modeling - Develop, review, and audit sophisticated financial models and valuation analyses. Lead comparable company, precedent transaction, and other financial analyses to help inform strategic recommendations for clients.

  • Transaction execution - Play an active role in executing client mandates by supporting due diligence, coordinating information flow across deal teams, and preparing offering memoranda, investor presentations, and other marketing materials. Work closely with internal partners and external advisors, including legal counsel, auditors, and accounting advisors, throughout the transaction lifecycle.

  • Industry insight - Conduct in-depth industry and company research to identify business opportunities, assess market developments, and support strategic advice for clients in the energy, infrastructure, and transition sectors.

  • Team leadership - Mentor, train, and provide guidance to junior team members across projects and day-to-day work. Help foster a collaborative team environment that supports strong execution and professional development.

  • Relationship management - Build and strengthen relationships with clients, internal partners, and external market participants. Contribute sector knowledge and market insight to client and deal team discussions, and support CIBC's profile through thoughtful engagement with stakeholders and the broader community.

Who you are

  • You're goal oriented. You're highly motivated, accountable, and able to take on significant responsibility in a fast-paced environment. You bring a strong drive to help clients solve complex financial and strategic challenges.

  • You have relevant education. You have an undergraduate degree in finance, accounting, mathematics, computer science, economics, or a related field. It's an asset if you hold a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

  • You have relevant experience. You bring 5+ years of experience in one or more of investment banking, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, private equity, or the energy, infrastructure, and transition sectors. Experience in financial modeling and analysis is required, and detailed knowledge of the Canadian energy or infrastructure sector is an asset.

  • You can demonstrate experience in financial modeling, valuation methodologies, accounting principles related to financial statement preparation and business combinations, and Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. It's an asset if you have experience with Bloomberg, FactSet, or Argus Enterprise.

  • You're motivated by collective success. You build strong relationships and work effectively with clients, colleagues, and external partners. You communicate complex ideas clearly and professionally, and you use sound judgment when making business decisions and representing CIBC Capital Markets.

  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work, and you live our values - trust, teamwork, and accountability.
