Remote Autonomous Underwater Vehicle information

What is a remote autonomous underwater vehicle?

Remote Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are unmanned, self-guided underwater robots used to explore, monitor, and collect data from aquatic environments. These vehicles operate without direct human control, navigating pre-programmed routes or responding to sensor inputs. They are commonly used in oceanography, marine research, underwater inspections, and environmental monitoring. AUVs can reach depths and areas that are challenging or dangerous for human divers, making them valuable tools for scientific and industrial applications.

What are the typical challenges faced when operating a remote autonomous underwater vehicle and how are they managed in a remote work setting?

Operating a Remote AUV often involves overcoming challenges such as limited real-time data transmission, navigating unpredictable underwater environments, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions from a distance. Remote operators frequently collaborate closely with on-site teams through video calls and digital platforms to coordinate missions, interpret sensor data, and resolve technical issues. Successful remote AUV operation relies on strong communication skills, proactive planning, and familiarity with remote diagnostics tools. Regular team briefings and standardized reporting procedures help ensure everyone stays aligned and mission objectives are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote autonomous underwater vehicle operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Operator, you need a background in marine engineering, robotics, or a related technical field, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Proficiency with AUV control software, navigation systems, sonar equipment, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for handling underwater missions and unexpected challenges. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and accurate operation of underwater vehicles in complex environments.

What is the difference between Remote Autonomous Underwater Vehicle vs Remote Underwater Robotics Technician?

AspectRemote Autonomous Underwater VehicleRemote Underwater Robotics Technician
CredentialsEngineering degrees, certifications in robotics or marine technologyTechnical certifications, hands-on training in robotics maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesign, programming, and deployment of autonomous systems in marine environmentsMaintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of underwater robotics equipment
Industry UsageResearch, exploration, military, and commercial applications involving autonomous systemsOperational support, field repairs, and system calibration in underwater settings

Remote Autonomous Underwater Vehicles focus on designing and deploying autonomous systems for underwater tasks, while Remote Underwater Robotics Technicians handle the maintenance and repair of underwater robotics equipment. Both roles are essential in marine technology industries but differ in responsibilities and skill sets.

Job description

Senior Product Designer, Autonomous Mobility & Delivery Experience

Autonomous vehicles are reshaping how people and goods move through cities. At Uber, we're building the experiences that make autonomous mobility feel intuitive, trustworthy, and seamlessly integrated into everyday life.

As a Product Designer on the Autonomous Mobility & Delivery Experience team, you'll define the future of how riders discover, understand, request, and complete autonomous trips. You'll work across the end-to-end journey, turning emerging technology into experiences that millions of people can confidently use.

This is a 0-to-1 environment where you must make big decisions without perfect information and own the outcomes. You'll need to navigate high-stakes ambiguity, balance near-term execution with long-term vision, and advocate for the user in a high-speed, technical landscape. If you think critically and are motivated by the challenge of real-world impact at a global scale, this is where you will grow.

What You'll Do
  • Design end-to-end experiences across the autonomous rider journey, from discovery and booking through pickup, ride, support, and beyond.
  • Shape product strategy alongside Product, Engineering, Operations, Research, Data Science, and partner teams.
  • Translate complex technical capabilities and operational constraints into simple, intuitive customer experiences.
  • Build trust by designing experiences that help riders understand what autonomous vehicles are doing, what to expect, and how to interact with them.
  • Develop scalable interaction patterns and frameworks that can support multiple autonomous vehicle partners and future capabilities.
  • Prototype and communicate ideas quickly to drive alignment and accelerate decision making.
  • Use research, experimentation, and data to continuously improve the rider experience.
  • Raise the quality bar through systems thinking, strong craft, and thoughtful design execution.
Basic qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional product design experience, with a proven track record of shipping, scaling, and iterating on high-quality consumer products.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strategic thinking alongside exceptional design craft.
  • Strong product thinking with the ability to balance user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AI-first design workflows, alongside exceptional interaction design, visual design, and prototyping skills.
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills with cross-functional partners and leadership and experience influencing product strategy beyond individual features.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with transportation, mapping, mobility, logistics, robotics, or AI-powered products.
  • Experience building and implementing components within a global, scalable design system.
  • Experience designing physical-digital experiences, including automotive HMI, in-vehicle experiences, or other connected products.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with user researchers and data scientists to drive experimentation and A/B testing.
  • Deep expertise in AI-native design workflows and complex technical prototyping, including building custom tools, agents, and production-ready implementations.
Why Join This Team

Autonomous mobility represents one of the biggest shifts in transportation in decades. You'll have the opportunity to define experiences that don't yet have industry standards, influence how millions of people interact with autonomous technology, and help shape the future of mobility on a global scale.
