Job description

Description
Fortune 100 stability! Front-line impact! Be the calm in someone's chaos!
Liberty Mutual has an immediate opening for an experienced claims professional to join our Complex Energy Team as a Senior Technical Claims Specialist! This role manages commercial third-party bodily injury and property damage claims for energy accounts across all 50 states, including litigation and high-dollar exposures!
A flexible way of working
This role offers a limited return-to-office schedule - just two days per month - and only if you reside within 50 miles of one of the following offices: Boston, MA; Hoffman Estates, IL; Indianapolis, IN; Lake Oswego, OR; Las Vegas, NV; Plano, TX; Suwanee, GA; Chandler, AZ; or Weatogue, CT. If you don't live near one of these locations, this is a fully remote role. (Please note this policy is subject to change.)
Why this role is compelling?
  • Take ownership of technically complex, high-exposure Energy claims from first notice through resolution. You'll be the trusted subject matter expert on matters that demand advanced coverage analysis, strategy, and litigation management.
  • Influence outcomes on high-profile matters (operators, contractors, utilities, midstream/downstream, power generation, pipelines) and work cross-functionally with underwriting, reinsurance, in-house counsel, and outside defense teams.
  • Use your deep technical knowledge - energy operations, catastrophic loss dynamics, multi-party liability, third-party property damage, bodily injury, and coverage nuances - to shape claims strategy, control cost, and protect our insureds and the company.

What we're looking for
We're seeking candidates with a strong background in complex General Liability, Auto, Energy claims, or other specialty Commercial claims handling - ideally with experience navigating multi-party liability, catastrophic loss, and litigated high-exposure files. Energy-sector claims experience is a strong plus, but candidates with comparable complex commercial GL, Auto(add), or specialty lines experience are encouraged to apply.
Key responsibilities
  • Lead full lifecycle handling of complex Commercial Energy claims: conduct coverage analysis, supervise investigation, determine liability, set and adjust reserves, and negotiate or litigate settlements.
  • Act as the claim owner with authority to authorize payments, approve reserving strategy, and recommend or execute claim denials when warranted.
  • Review and drive response to complaint, suit documentation, discovery, expert reports, and technical files; develop litigation plans and settlement strategies.
  • Assemble and manage the appropriate internal and external teams (Home Office Legal, Defense Counsel, technical experts, Home Office Claims, underwriting, reinsurance) based on loss dynamics and allegation exposure.
  • Oversee selection, engagement and oversight of outside Counsel and technical experts, Home Office Claims, underwriting, reinsurance) based on loss dynamics and allegation exposure.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for complex coverage and energy-specific issues; advise claims leadership on policy wording implications, emerging legal trends, and potential changes to claims practices or training needs.
  • Mentor less experienced claims examiners; provide guidance on technical investigations, negotiation, strategy and litigation handling.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of financial and claims file information; comply with company policies, regulatory requirements and security standards.
  • Participate in special projects (e.g., claims process improvement, litigation strategy initiatives, cross-functional task forces).

Qualifications
Litigation-Focused Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, with 5-7+ years of progressively complex Commercial Casualty claims experience, emphasizing litigated Commercial General Liability/Auto and/or Energy claims involving oil & gas, power generation, renewable energy and/or energy-adjacent contractors
  • Demonstrated expertise managing Energy-specific litigation, including upstream, midstream, and downstream exposures such as well blowouts, pipeline incidents, refinery operations, energy construction, transportation, catastrophic injury, and multi-party losses
  • Demonstrated strength in litigation management, including oversight of defense counsel, evaluation of pleadings and motion practice, development of discovery and deposition strategy, and participation in mediations, arbitrations, and trials
  • Advanced proficiency in coverage analysis within a litigation context, including interpretation of complex policy language, reservations of rights, coverage defenses, indemnity and additional insured disputes
  • Strong experience setting and managing high-exposure indemnity and expense reserves aligned with litigation strategy and evolving case posture
  • Proven ability to assess liability, causation, damages, and venue risk, and to develop effective resolution strategies for contested, multi-party, or catastrophic claims
  • In-depth knowledge of the insurance legal and regulatory environment, with the ability to apply sound judgment to nuanced legal issues and emerging case law
  • Track record of independently managing a litigation-heavy claim portfolio, balancing strategic risk, financial stewardship, and timely resolution
  • Highly effective communicator with the ability to influence attorneys, internal legal partners, underwriting, reinsurance, and leadership through clear analysis and recommendations
  • Experience handling moderate to highly complex Energy and/or Commercial General Liability/Auto litigation-including catastrophic injury, or contractor-related losses-strongly preferred
  • All lines Adjuster License required
