Job description

Job Description

Work Arrangement

This role is a hybrid work arrangement. If you live within a 50-mile radius of Austin, Warren, or Sunnyvale, you are expected to report to that location at least three times per week. This job may be eligible for relocation benefits. Remote candidates may still be considered.

The Role

General Motors is seeking a Designer to expand our design system team. We're looking for a highly skilled Designer with deep expertise in design systems, Figma, and designing for software, web, and mobile products. In this role, you'll play a central part in developing and maintaining the GM
Design System, including the creation of reusable components, documentation, and guidance-ensuring consistency, accessibility, and quality across our digital platforms.

Ideal candidates will have an affinity towards modernism and bring strong systems thinking and a passion for scalable, well-documented design. Your craft should be rooted in clarity, structure, and functionality-not just aesthetics, and you should be comfortable collaborating closely with engineers to ensure high-fidelity implementation.

What You'll Do
  • Design and maintain robust, reusable components and patterns within the GM Design System to ensure consistency and maintainability.

  • Build and manage shared libraries in Figma, including UI kits, tokens, and documentation.

  • Design component, guidance, and documentation pages for Figma UI Kit/s.

  • Partner closely with front-end developers to ensure designs are implemented accurately and efficiently.

  • Create documentation, usage guidelines, and specs for system components.

  • Ensure accessibility, scalability, and consistency across digital products.

  • Collaborate with product designers, engineers, and brand teams across vehicle OS, web, and mobile to unify the system and encourage shared design language.

  • Advocate for best practices in systems design, tooling, and handoff workflows.

  • Conduct audits and propose system enhancements based on product needs and user feedback

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in HCI, Graphic Design, Visual Design, Interaction Design, Product Design, Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

  • 3+ years of professional experience in digital product design, with a strong focus on design systems and component-based design.

  • Deep expertise in Figma, including auto layout, variants, tokens, and library management.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and a solid understanding of vector-based design and iconography.

  • Experience designing for web, mobile, and software products, with an understanding of responsive and adaptive UI patterns.

  • Strong knowledge of typography, visual hierarchy, and UI best practices.

  • Experience with versioning, naming conventions, and scalable design workflows.

  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG), prototyping tools, prototyping click-throughs, and design tokens.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • A systems-oriented mindset with an outstanding eye for detail and consistency.

  • The ability to translate complex design needs into elegant, scalable solutions.

  • Passion for collaboration-especially across design, engineering, and platform teams.

  • Discipline in documentation, file hygiene, and naming conventions.

  • A belief that the best design systems are built for real-world application-not theory.
