Remote Attorney Brief Writing information

What does a remote attorney specializing in brief writing do?

A remote attorney specializing in brief writing prepares legal briefs, motions, and other court documents for law firms or clients while working from a location outside the traditional office. Their primary responsibility is to research relevant law, analyze case facts, and draft persuasive written arguments to support their clients’ positions in court. These attorneys often collaborate with trial lawyers, stay updated on legal precedents, and ensure all documents comply with court rules and deadlines. Remote brief writers typically use secure online platforms to communicate and share documents, enabling them to work efficiently from anywhere.

What are some common challenges faced by remote attorneys specializing in brief writing, and how can they be addressed?

Remote attorneys focused on brief writing often encounter challenges such as limited face-to-face communication with clients and legal teams, managing competing deadlines, and ensuring access to up-to-date legal resources. To address these issues, it is important to establish clear communication channels—such as regular video check-ins or collaborative document platforms—and to develop strong organizational skills for managing multiple assignments. Additionally, leveraging legal research databases and staying connected with colleagues for peer reviews can help maintain high-quality work and a collaborative atmosphere, even when working remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote attorney specializing in brief writing, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Attorney focusing on brief writing, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and excellent legal research and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and proficiency in word processing and document management software, are typically required. Outstanding written communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the production of persuasive, accurate, and well-supported legal briefs while maintaining efficiency and meeting remote work demands.

Job description

This is a fully remote position marked as "Hybrid" to encourage local, southern CA attorneys to apply. Qualified, CA-barred attorneys from out of state are also encouraged to apply if they can work CA hours. We are looking for a licensed attorney to join a burgeoning litigation practice focused on consumer automotive defense matters. The firm has offices in DTLA and Irvine for people who want to work hybrid, but the role is a primarily remote work arrangement. This attorney will provide meaningful involvement in active cases across state and federal courts. The position is well suited for someone who enjoys litigation and wants the opportunity to contribute in areas such as motion practice, depositions, hearings, and trial preparation within a collaborative, support-driven environment.

Responsibilities:

Manage a caseload of consumer automotive defense matters, including cases involving lemon law, fraud, and related business claims. Handle substantive litigation tasks such as drafting pleadings, preparing motions, and developing persuasive written arguments for court filings. Oversee discovery strategy and execution, including written discovery, document review, and deposition preparation and participation. Appear for hearings, conferences, and other court proceedings as needed in state and federal venues.

Communicate regularly with clients, insurance carriers, opposing counsel, and internal team members to keep matters moving efficiently. Collaborate with paralegals and support staff to coordinate case activity while taking the lead on higher-level legal analysis and advocacy. Contribute to litigation planning based on individual strengths, with opportunities to emphasize trial work, deposition practice, or law and motion. Maintain accurate time records and meet the annual billable expectation associated with the role.

Active attorney license with the ability to handle matters during California business hours. Experience or demonstrated capability in civil litigation and defense-side legal practice. Strong skills in drafting motions, briefs, pleadings, and other litigation documents. Working knowledge of discovery procedures, including taking or defending depositions. Ability to manage multiple matters in a fast-paced, high-volume practice setting. Strong communication skills for interacting with clients, carriers, courts, and opposing counsel. Familiarity with consumer automotive litigation, lemon law, or related defense matters is preferred.
