What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote At-Risk Youth Counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote At-Risk Youth Counselor, you need a background in psychology, social work, or counseling—often supported by a relevant degree and professional licensure. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure communication tools, and case management software is typically required. Strong active listening, empathy, and crisis intervention skills help you build trust and effectively support youth in challenging situations. These skills are vital for providing accessible, safe, and impactful guidance to at-risk youth in a remote setting.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working remotely with at-risk youth, and how can these be addressed?

One of the main challenges in remote roles supporting at-risk youth is building trust and rapport through virtual communication. Without face-to-face interactions, it can be harder to read nonverbal cues and maintain engagement. To address this, professionals often use video calls, regular check-ins, and interactive digital resources to foster connection. Additionally, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams—including counselors, educators, and social workers—helps ensure comprehensive support for each youth. Continuous professional development and supervision also play a key role in navigating complex cases and maintaining effective service delivery.

What are remote at-risk youth jobs?

Remote at-risk youth jobs involve working with young people who face significant challenges, such as mental health issues, family instability, or involvement with the justice system, through online platforms. Professionals in these roles may provide counseling, mentoring, educational support, or case management virtually. The goal is to support and guide at-risk youth toward positive outcomes, even when in-person services are not possible. These positions are ideal for individuals with backgrounds in social work, counseling, education, or psychology and require strong communication and empathy skills.

For over 60 years, we’ve been a pioneer in community-based services, transforming lives through innovative programs for individuals involved in the child welfare, juvenile justice, or criminal justice systems.

Join our mission-driven team as a Bilingual MST Therapist at our CSI Secaucus, NJ location. You’ll play a key role providing evidence-based therapeutic interventions to youth, their families, communities, and other key members. The MST Therapist will provide intensive, home-based therapy to adolescents and their families who are involved in the juvenile justice system or at risk of out-of-home placement. What is Multisystemic Therapy (MST)?

Multisystemic Therapy (MST) typically targets chronic, violent, or substance-abusing juvenile offender ages 12 through 17. MST’s home-based therapy design helps overcome barriers to service, increases family retention in treatment, allows for the provision of the intensive services (i.e., therapists have a maximum of 6 cases), and enhances the maintenance of successful behavior change.

Why Work with Us?

  • Life-Changing Work: Help individuals on parole rebuild their lives and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.
  • Trauma-Informed Approach: CSI is committed to understanding and addressing trauma. You'll receive ongoing training to ensure you can support clients with care and compassion.

  • Growth Opportunities: Expand your expertise with training, certification, and professional development options in a growing organization.

What You'll Do:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of individuals and families to identify presenting problems, strengths and systemic factors contributing to difficulties.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on the principles of Multisystemic Therapy, incorporating relevant evidence-based interventions and strategies.
  • Provide direct therapeutic interventions to at-risk youth and their families and collaborate with other key members.
  • Implement crisis management strategies as needed to address immediate safety concerns for clients and their families.
  • Participate in individual and group supervision training to enhance clinical skills and ensure fidelity to the MST model.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client progress, including sessions notes, treatment plans, and outcome measures.
  • Collaborate with other professionals and service providers involved in client’s ecosystem, including social services, schools, court, mental health agencies, etc.

Annual Salary: $60,000-65,000

What We’re Looking For:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field. Bachelor's Degree considered with experience.
  • Must be bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation to travel to clients' homes and possibly transport multiple clients at once.
  • Must live within a 90-minute travel time from the designated service area.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a caseload while adhering to program requirements and deadlines.
  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills, with the ability to formulate comprehensive treatment plans.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural competence and trauma-informed practice.

Benefits We Offer:

  • Generous Time Off: 2 weeks of vacation your first year (increasing to 3 weeks after 1 year), 7 days of sick time, and 4 floating holidays.
  • Health & Wellness: Medical, dental, and voluntary vision plans, plus FSA, short-term disability, accident insurance, hospital coverage, life insurance, and AD&D options.
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan: Automatic enrollment with a 100% company match up to 4%.
