Remote Astronomy Software Engineer information

What is a remote astronomy software engineer?

Remote Astronomy Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems used in astronomical research and observation, all while working from a remote location. They collaborate with scientists and engineers to create tools for data collection, analysis, and visualization, often handling large datasets from telescopes or simulations. Their work supports discoveries in astrophysics by ensuring that astronomers have reliable, efficient software to process and interpret data. The remote aspect allows them to contribute to projects globally, often working with international research teams.

How does a remote astronomy software engineer typically collaborate with astronomers and other scientific team members?

As a Remote Astronomy Software Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with astronomers, data scientists, and research teams through virtual meetings, shared documentation platforms, and version control systems. Effective communication is essential, as you'll often translate complex scientific requirements into robust and efficient software solutions. You may be involved in code reviews, troubleshooting sessions, and the integration of software tools with astronomical instrumentation or data pipelines. Building strong remote working relationships and proactively seeking feedback are key to ensuring your software meets the evolving needs of scientific users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote astronomy software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Astronomy Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, experience with scientific programming, and a familiarity with astronomical concepts, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or C++, experience with data analysis tools, and knowledge of astronomical data systems like FITS or VO are typically required. Strong problem-solving, independent work ethic, and effective virtual communication skills set top candidates apart. These abilities are crucial for developing robust software solutions that support astronomical research, often in distributed and collaborative environments.

We are looking for a talented and experienced Senior Software Engineer (.NET). In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain scalable, cloud-native applications and services using .NET and Microsoft Azure, working directly with our client to understand their needs and deliver reliable solutions. This position offers the opportunity to support a long-term client engagement in a remote, stable full-time or contract role.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test backend applications and services using C# / .NET and strong SQL/relational database practices.
  • Design, deploy, and maintain cloud infrastructure and services on Microsoft Azure.
  • Build and support identity and access management solutions using Microsoft Entra ID and the Microsoft Graph .NET SDK.
  • Develop serverless solutions using Azure Functions.
  • Build and orchestrate data-driven workflows using Azure Data Factory (ADF) for data movement and transformation at scale.
  • Implement asynchronous, decoupled messaging patterns using Azure Queue Storage or RabbitMQ.
  • Manage unstructured data storage and retrieval using Azure Blob Storage and the Azure.Storage.Blobs SDK.
  • Partner directly with the client to gather requirements, provide technical recommendations, and communicate progress and tradeoffs clearly.
  • Work with other engineers to design and implement software architecture, including APIs and integrations.
  • Write unit tests and follow test-driven development practices.
  • Optimize application performance, scalability, and security.
  • Debug and troubleshoot software issues across the stack, including in live client environments.

Qualifications
Must-Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, with direct client-facing experience required.
  • Strong programming skills in .NET.
  • Strong SQL and relational database design skills.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including Azure Functions and Azure Data Factory.
  • Experience with Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) and the Microsoft Graph .NET SDK.
  • Experience with Azure Queue Storage, RabbitMQ, or similar messaging systems.
  • Experience with Azure Blob Storage for unstructured data management.
  • Experience with Git and other version control systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Excellent client management and communication skills - comfortable presenting technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Understanding of modern DevOps principles.

Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with additional messaging/event systems (Kafka, Azure Service Bus).

Location:

  • Remote, but USA-based, Eastern or Central Standard Time Zone.

We offer:

  • $70 per hour, 1099 - long-term contract with the potential for full-time OR $120k salary for FTE.
