Remote Astronomy Software Engineer information

What are Remote Astronomy Software Engineers?

Remote Astronomy Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems used in astronomical research and observation, all while working from a remote location. They collaborate with scientists and engineers to create tools for data collection, analysis, and visualization, often handling large datasets from telescopes or simulations. Their work supports discoveries in astrophysics by ensuring that astronomers have reliable, efficient software to process and interpret data. The remote aspect allows them to contribute to projects globally, often working with international research teams.

How does a Remote Astronomy Software Engineer typically collaborate with astronomers and other scientific team members?

As a Remote Astronomy Software Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with astronomers, data scientists, and research teams through virtual meetings, shared documentation platforms, and version control systems. Effective communication is essential, as you'll often translate complex scientific requirements into robust and efficient software solutions. You may be involved in code reviews, troubleshooting sessions, and the integration of software tools with astronomical instrumentation or data pipelines. Building strong remote working relationships and proactively seeking feedback are key to ensuring your software meets the evolving needs of scientific users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Astronomy Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Astronomy Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, experience with scientific programming, and a familiarity with astronomical concepts, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or C++, experience with data analysis tools, and knowledge of astronomical data systems like FITS or VO are typically required. Strong problem-solving, independent work ethic, and effective virtual communication skills set top candidates apart. These abilities are crucial for developing robust software solutions that support astronomical research, often in distributed and collaborative environments.

About the Role

Do you love scripting, dissecting installers, and building automation at scale? We are looking for aย Software Packaging Engineerย with deep IT and/or Managed Service Provider (MSP) experience to build highโ€‘quality thirdโ€‘party software packages for our automated patching platform. You will research vendor applications, analyze installers,ย and build package metadata that powers our RMMโ€™s thirdโ€‘party patching engine. Your work will directly influence the reliability and security of thousands of organizations around the world.ย You will join our Software Engineering team, working alongside other Software Product Engineers.โ€ฏ Collaborating with our Product Managers, Software Development Engineers, and our Support Engineers, you will work with like-minded individuals to deliver exceptional, productionโ€‘ready automation content forย NinjaOneย clients.ย

Location - We are flexible on remote working from home, if you are located in the USA and reside in one of the following states - CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, *IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NC, NY, OR, TN, TX, VA, and WA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL, if you prefer a hybrid option.

We hire the best software engineers, but experience in our stack canโ€™t hurt: NinjaOne is built onย Java, Kotlin, C++, Golang and Postgres; supporting millions of user endpoints and running as a scalable cloud service in AWS.ย  Knowing large-scale datastore bottlenecks, asynchronous application design and client-server architecture will help you.

What Youโ€™ll be Doingย

  • Thirdโ€‘Party Patch Packaging & Content Developmentย
  • Build highโ€‘quality software packages for our patching platform, including installer metadata, detection logic, and automation scripts.ย
  • Analyze vendor installers (MSI, EXE, custom frameworks) to determine silent install parameters, upgrade behavior, and OS compatibility.ย
  • Automaticallyย detect new software versions from vendor websites.ย
  • Develop endpointโ€‘side scripts to download, install, upgrade, and verify thirdโ€‘party applications.ย
  • Strategic Research & Standards Developmentย
  • Research vendor release patterns, installer technologies, and best practices for secure and reliable patching.ย
  • Define and maintain packaging standards that improve consistency, reliability, and security across all supported applications.ย
  • Continuously enhance our package catalog to reflect evolving IT and security requirements.ย
  • Frontline Automation & Rapid Responseย
  • Build oneโ€‘off or urgent automation scripts in response to emerging vulnerabilities, vendor changes, or customer needs.ย
  • Troubleshoot packaging issues, installer failures, and automation edge cases.ย
  • Partner with Support and Engineering teams to resolve customerโ€‘impacting issues quickly and effectively.ย
  • Other duties as neededย

ย About You

  • 3+ years of experience installing, maintaining, configuring, and automating software on Windows, Mac, and Linux.ย
  • 3+ years of experience scripting in PowerShell (Bash or Python a plus).ย
  • Strong understanding of installer technologies (MSI, InstallShield, NSIS, Inno Setup, custom EXEs).ย
  • Experience with software packaging for RMM, SCCM, Intune, or similar endpoint management platforms.ย
  • Ability to break down complex installer behavior and build reliable silent install/upgrade workflows.ย
  • Familiarity with secure configuration baselines and the challenges IT teams face in maintaining them.ย
  • Experience with source control and interacting with REST APIs.ย
  • A passion for problemโ€‘solving and building automation that scales.ย
