Job description

The Director-Data Platform Engineering is responsible for the strategic leadership, governance, and delivery of Alliance Health's modern cloud based data engineering platform, replacing the legacy Enterprise Data Warehouse operating model.
The Director-Data Platform Engineering provides enterprise accountability for the design, development, operation, and continuous evolution of the data platform, ensuring secure, scalable, and high quality data products that support analytics, reporting, interoperability, regulatory compliance, and organizational decision making. The Director leads the Data Platform Engineering team and oversees the phased migration and sunset of legacy EDW capabilities as data domains transition to the modern platform.
This position is full-time remote. Selected candidate must reside in North Carolina and be willing to travel to the home office (Morrisville, NC) for onsite team meetings as needed.
Responsibilities & Duties
Data Platform Strategy and Enterprise Leadership
  • Define, own, and execute the enterprise data platform strategy and roadmap aligned with Alliance Health's Data Modernization Initiative
  • Lead the transition from legacy EDW architecture to a cloud native Lakehouse and data engineering platform
  • Establish platform success metrics related to scalability, reliability, performance, cost management, and business value
  • Serve as the executive level authority for enterprise data platform direction and technical decision making

Organizational Leadership and Workforce Development
  • Lead and develop the Data Platform Engineering team, including the Cloud Data Architect, Lead Cloud Data Engineer, Cloud Data Engineers, Data Quality Engineer, Business Analyst, and Data Governance Analyst
  • Establish role clarity, career pathways, and performance expectations aligned with Alliance Health's IT Job Architecture
  • Coach and mentor senior technical staff to strengthen leadership capability, engineering discipline, and platform ownership
  • Build a sustainable internal delivery model that reduces long term reliance on consultants

Engineering Governance and Technical Oversight
  • Establish and enforce enterprise standards for data ingestion, transformation, and serving layers, medallion and Lakehouse architecture patterns, CI/CD, DevOps, and environment management, and monitoring, observability, and production support
  • Provide oversight and approval for complex architecture and solution designs impacting the enterprise data platform
  • Ensure consistency of engineering practices across data domains and delivery teams

Data Quality, Security, and Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure enterprise wide data quality standards, validation frameworks, and monitoring capabilities are implemented
  • Partner with Security, Compliance, and Governance teams to ensure adherence to HIPAA and HITECH requirements, data classification, encryption, access controls, and audit logging
  • Maintain accountability for platform stability, incident response, and root cause remediation

Program Delivery and Legacy EDW Sunset
  • Provide executive oversight for data domain migrations, analytics and reporting modernization, and decommissioning of legacy EDW assets
  • Manage cross functional dependencies, delivery risks, and sequencing of modernization activities
  • Ensure transparent reporting on delivery status, risks, and outcomes to executive leadership

Stakeholder Engagement and Executive Communication
  • Act as the primary liaison between IT leadership, business stakeholders, analytics teams, and external partners for data platform initiatives
  • Translate business and regulatory requirements into scalable technical capabilities
  • Communicate platform strategy, risks, progress, and outcomes to executive leadership

Minimum Requirements
Education & Experience
Required:
Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, with six (6) years of experience with increasing responsibilities in data engineering, data architecture, or enterprise data platform leadership and three (3) years of experience in people management, platform governance, and cross functional delivery. Demonstrate experience leading enterprise scale data platforms on Microsoft Azure, including data Lakehouse or data warehouse modernization initiatives.
Experience should also include operating in regulated environments, preferably healthcare, with responsibility for data security, privacy, and compliance outcomes.
The following technical certification (or comparable) is required:
  • Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional

Preferred:
Master's degree in computer science or a related field, with five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in data engineering, data architecture, or enterprise data platform leadership preferred.
Any of the following or comparable technical certification is preferred:
  • Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert
  • Databricks Certified Professional
  • Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ 500)

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Implementing and maintaining enterprise-scale Medallion data platforms on Microsoft Azure

Employment for this position is contingent upon a satisfactory background and credit check, which will be performed after acceptance of an offer of employment and prior to the employee's start date.
Salary Range
$131,191-$167,268/Annually
Exact compensation will be determined based on the candidate's education, experience, external market data and consideration of internal equity.
