Are you an experienced Payment Processor who enjoys solving complex accounting problems, cleaning up messy books, and helping entrepreneurs build stronger businesses? Do you thrive in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment where every client presents a unique challenge?
Pretty Books is looking for a highly technical Senior Staff Accountant to join our growing remote team. This is a senior-level position for someone who can immediately take ownership of client relationships, solve difficult accounting issues, mentor other accountants, and continuously improve the way accounting is delivered.
This is not a traditional bookkeeping role. We specialize in solving the accounting challenges that many firms avoid-from multi-year cleanup projects and complex reconciliations to system implementations, revenue analysis, and process improvements.

This Role is 60 / 40
Client Accounting & Advisory (60%)
You'll manage approximately 12-15 client relationships while serving as their primary accounting advisor.
Responsibilities include:
Full-cycle accounting and month-end close
General ledger management
Journal entries
Financial statement preparation
Balance sheet reconciliations
Revenue recognition and revenue reconciliation
Sales tax research and reconciliation
Cash flow reporting
Budgeting and forecasting
Financial modeling
Cleanup of historical accounting records
Present financial information to business owners in a clear and practical manner
Build custom workpapers, reconciliation schedules, and reporting tools
Leadership & Quality Control (40%)
You'll also help strengthen our accounting practice by supporting the technical development of our team.
Responsibilities include:
Review and approve month-end close work prepared by staff accountants
Perform quality control reviews of financial statements
Mentor and train junior accountants
Develop internal accounting procedures and best practices
Improve technical documentation and workpapers
Support software implementations and process improvements
Help improve efficiency through automation and technology
This Position Requires You to Hit the Ground Running
This is a senior position with minimal onboarding.
We are looking for someone who can independently solve accounting problems and confidently own client relationships from day one.
You should already be comfortable performing:
Multi-year QuickBooks Online cleanup projects
Complete month-end and year-end close
Complex balance sheet reconciliations
Revenue reconciliation
Sales tax research and compliance
General ledger cleanup
Deferred revenue schedules
Payroll liability reconciliations
Fixed asset accounting
Depreciation and amortization schedules
High-volume transaction reconciliation
Financial reporting
Budget creation
Forecast development

We're looking for a Senior Staff Accountant who enjoys learning new software, solving technology problems, and using modern tools to work more efficiently.
You should be comfortable:
Working in a fully remote, paperless environment
Leading client meetings over Zoom or Google Meet
Using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claud, or similar platforms to improve productivity, research accounting topics, summarize findings, and streamline workflows
Learning new accounting software quickly with minimal guidance
Troubleshooting accounting software and technology issues
Investigating data flow problems between multiple systems
Understanding how accounting data moves between POS systems, ecommerce platforms, payment processors, payroll providers, and QuickBooks Online
Researching mapping errors and identifying the source of financial discrepancies
Importing, exporting, validating, and reconciling large datasets

Minimum Qualifications
Required
10+ years of progressive accounting experience
Strong understanding of GAAP
Extensive QuickBooks Online experience

Experience leading complete month-end close processes
Advanced balance sheet reconciliation skills
Advanced Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets proficiency
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience working in a fully remote environment
Comfortable leading virtual client meetings
Comfortable learning new software and troubleshooting technology independently
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
CPA or CPA candidate
Public accounting or Client Accounting Services (CAS) experience
Controller or outsourced accounting experience
Experience implementing accounting software and improving business processes
