OVERVIEW

Merrick & Company’s High Performance Facilities (HPF) team is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Facilities Engineer to support the design and delivery of HVAC and plumbing systems for a wide range of national defense projects in our San Antonio, TX office.

Remote employees must be based in the San Antonio area and able to meet with local clients as needed.

Relocation will be considered.

From multi-building campuses to secure facilities across the globe, the HPF team delivers practical, high-performance solutions that meet Government requirements for resilience, readiness, and reliability. Our work directly supports the operation and efficiency of installations critical to the protection and defense of the United States.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Senior Mechanical Facilities Engineer will support the design and delivery of HVAC and plumbing/piping systems for a wide range of mission critical to mission support projects. This role requires independent execution, direct coordination with clients and project teams, and technical leadership within assigned scope.

The Senior Mechanical Facilities Engineer will serve as a senior member of a multidisciplinary team, providing technical guidance and mentoring junior staff to ensure coordinated, high-quality, and constructible deliverables.

Project work will encompass:

  • Develop and coordinate HVAC and plumbing system design, including engineering calculations, system layout, equipment selection, HVAC controls, and development of coordinated construction documents.
  • Support development and technical oversight of Division 22 and 23 specifications, ensuring alignment with UFC, UFGS, and applicable codes and standards including ICC, IMC, IPC, ASHRAE, and NFPA.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of mechanical designs, ensuring technical accuracy, code compliance, and alignment with project requirements.
  • Support proposal development, including defining mechanical scope and developing fee and design schedule estimates.
  • Interface directly with Federal, State, and Local government clients, including participation in design reviews, value engineering studies, charrettes, and technical discussions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum twelve (12) years of experience in HVAC and plumbing system design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.

Technical Experience

  • Demonstrated experience designing HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial, institutional, or federal facilities.
  • Experience in performing engineering calculations and equipment selection for air systems, hydronic systems, and building water systems.
  • Experience developing coordinated construction documents (plans, details, schedules).
  • Experience developing and coordinating Division 22 and 23 specifications.

Codes, Standards, and Tools

  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards including IMC, IPC, IBC, ASHRAE, SMACNA, and NFPA.
  • Familiarity with DoD design criteria (UFC, UFGS).
  • Experience with HVAC load calculation software (e.g., Trane TRACE or equivalent).
  • Proficient in Revit for MEP coordination; familiarity with AutoCAD.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience supporting federal or DoD projects (e.g., USACE, AFCEC, NAVFAC).
  • Experience supporting construction administration (submittals, RFIs, site visits).
  • Familiarity with Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) and energy modeling (ASHRAE 90.1).
  • LEED, Green Globes, or other sustainability accreditation.
  • Current passport.
