What is a Remote Arborist job?

A Remote Arborist is a tree care professional who provides expertise and guidance on tree health, maintenance, and risk assessment without being physically on-site. They use technology such as satellite imagery, drone footage, and client-submitted photos to analyze tree conditions and offer recommendations. Remote Arborists may work for consulting firms, government agencies, or tree care companies, assisting with diagnosis, best practices, and management plans. This role is ideal for experienced arborists who want to leverage their knowledge while working from a distance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Arborist position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Arborist, you need a thorough understanding of tree biology, pest and disease identification, and arboricultural best practices, typically bolstered by training in forestry or arboriculture. Familiarity with GIS mapping software, remote sensing tools, and relevant certifications such as ISA Certified Arborist are highly valuable. Excellent written communication, analytical thinking, and self-motivation help remote arborists effectively collaborate, manage projects, and provide actionable recommendations. Mastering these skills enables accurate tree assessments, effective problem-solving, and high-quality client service even when working off-site.

What does a typical workday look like for a Remote Arborist and how do they interact with on-site teams?

A typical workday for a Remote Arborist involves analyzing aerial imagery, satellite data, and reports to assess tree health, provide recommendations, and create management plans. You’ll spend most of your time working with digital tools, documenting findings, and communicating with clients, property managers, or field crews via email, video conferencing, or project management platforms. While you may rarely visit job sites in person, regular collaboration with on-site arborists and field technicians is essential to ensure your remote assessments are effectively implemented. This hybrid approach allows you to make meaningful contributions from a distance while staying closely connected with teams in the field.
