Remote Applied Scientist Machine Learning information

What does a remote applied scientist machine learning do?

A Remote Applied Scientist in Machine Learning develops and implements machine learning models to solve real-world problems, often from a location outside of a traditional office. Their work involves analyzing large datasets, designing algorithms, and collaborating with teams to deploy scalable solutions. They may also conduct experiments to improve model performance and stay up to date with the latest research in the field. Communication and documentation are important, as they often work with cross-functional teams remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote applied scientist machine learning?

To thrive as a Remote Applied Scientist in Machine Learning, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, often supported by an advanced degree and experience in ML algorithm development. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, and tools for data processing and cloud computing is essential. Exceptional problem-solving ability, communication, and self-motivation are key soft skills for collaborating remotely and driving projects forward. These skills ensure you can independently design, implement, and communicate impactful machine learning solutions in a distributed work environment.

What can I expect in terms of collaboration and communication when working as a remote applied scientist machine learning?

As a Remote Applied Scientist in Machine Learning, you will frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data engineers, product managers, and software developers. Communication typically takes place via video calls, chat platforms, and shared documentation, so strong written and verbal communication skills are essential. You may participate in regular virtual stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to align on project goals and share progress. Remote work environments emphasize proactive communication and self-management to ensure seamless teamwork and project delivery.

Job description

If you love using innovative technology to tackle tough science problems and working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team environment, keep reading to learn more about the Strayos Applied Scientist internship opportunity.

Here at Strayos, we use advanced computer vision and machine learning on images and machine sensors data to build insights for Mining, Infrastructure and Construction industry. Our applied science team uses these datasets to better understand our customers critical business operations and how it is changing. We are seeking three exceptional students with experience interpreting and processing imagery to join our applied science team during a three-month internship based at Strayos' headquarters in Buffalo, WNY.

Over the course of this internship, you will work directly with our dynamic team of applied scientists who can share their deep knowledge of machine learning, remote sensing, geoscience, and physics. As an intern, you will learn how to implement novel, cutting-edge remote sensing and machine learning techniques to solve challenging research questions. To efficiently execute your solutions, you will access the Strayos' imagery archive and cloud-computing resources, and receive mentorship from one of our applied scientists. At the end of the internship, you will present your findings to the broader applied science team and learn more about future career opportunities at Strayos.

Responsibilities

  • Leverage our Python-based platform to query, access, and manipulate aerial imagery

  • Utilize machine learning or other classification techniques to analyze aerial imagery

  • Produce clear, concise results (e.g. ML models, statistics) for a project that can be completed during the course of the internship

Requirements

  • Candidates must currently be enrolled in an academic degree program in Geography, Geoscience, Earth Science, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or a related field, within 1 year of completion.

  • Experience with Python & Numpy

  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Ability to work independently

Preferred skills

  • Experience with machine learning and image classification

  • Proficiency with the following Python packages: numpy, scikit-learn, keras

  • Experience working with aerial or satellite imagery and geospatial data.

Employment Type: INTERN
