Job summary:
Under the general direction of the Regional Vice President (RVP), Group Leader, the RVP, Benefits Compliance, Atlantic Region will join a team of other compliance attorneys and specialists dedicated to providing exemplary benefits compliance support services. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing guidance to our employee benefit consultants and their clients on compliance with a broad range of laws applicable to health and welfare plans, including ERISA, PPACA, COBRA, HIPAA, Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, Transparency in Coverage and No Surprises Acts, Internal Revenue Code (including Section 125), FSAs, HRAs, HSAs, FMLA and other state and federal laws. This role requires understanding relevant laws and explaining benefits compliance inquiries in language accessible to laypeople. The individual must communicate clearly with benefits brokers, consultants, and employer clients. Responsibilities include reviewing employee benefits compliance checklists, assisting with seminars and webinars, and offering internal training to employee benefit consultants and their clients across the Atlantic Region as assigned by market segment. Physical proximity to the Atlantic Region is preferred.
Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Perform compliance checklist reviews for key and national account clients, including pre-checklist review and detailed follow-up in coordination with account management teams.
  • Respond to benefits compliance questions in a timely manner, often within 24 hours.
  • Stay abreast of the changing legislative and regulatory landscape, to include statutory legislation and regulation impacting the Region.
  • Attend internal Benefits Compliance Team meetings regularly.
  • Attend internal regional and office-specific meetings (Team Lead, office-specific, etc.) regularly.
  • Own or co-own regional compliance initiatives in conjunction with regional sales and account management leaders, including regular regional decisions, education, and webinar training.
  • Communicate and educate account teams (and clients, as relevant) on compliance initiatives and resources, including Compliance Toolkits, Publications, and NFP Connect.
  • Conduct or support benefits compliance seminars and webinars.
  • Contribute to the overall mission of the Benefits Compliance Department including other duties as assigned by the team and/or the Regional Leads.
Knowledge, skills, and/or abilities
  • Must have knowledge of laws and regulations governing health and welfare plans.
  • Must have clear communication skills and ability to explain compliance in easy to understand and accessible language to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must be a self-motivated worker with strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
  • Must have excellent presentation skills
  • Must have a strong sense of business ethics and integrity
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality in regard to work performed and access to information/data
  • Must maintain a professional and positive attitude

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None required, but there is opportunity for mentoring and cross-training with team members nationally.
Education and/or experience:
  • Brokerage/consultant account management experience preferred.
  • Law degree not required, but attorneys will be considered.
  • Prior experience with federal or state governmental regulatory body a plus.
  • CEBS designation (or equivalent industry experience) a plus.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in employee benefits and/or compliance.
  • Physical proximity to the Region preferred to support light travel to clients and offices.

The base salary range for this position is $120,000.00 - $165,000.00. The base salary offered will be determined by factors including, but not limited to, experience, credentials, education, certifications, skill level required for the position, the scope of the position, and geographic location. Actual base salary offered will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
