Job description

GDS Associates, Inc. has an exciting and challenging opportunity with advancement and growth potential for an experienced natural gas professional to work in our Planning & Advisory Business Unit. This person will provide market insight and analysis, procurement planning, contracting expertise across the natural gas supply chain, contract administration experience, risk management, and regulatory expertise with an emphasis on supporting power projects.

GDS is a nationwide multi-service engineering and consulting firm specializing in the energy utilities industry. We have a significant and growing practice in the power supply planning area representing utility and power developer clients in strategic procurement, planning, market optimization, and effective management of power supply resources across the U.S.

Responsibilities:
Working under limited supervision, the position requires strong senior experience in understanding complex natural gas and related power market issues to perform the following:

  • Support the development and lead/manage natural gas supply projects for power generation facilities from initiation to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and match the scope and quality required to meet the clients' needs.
  • Support GDS's projects that include in its scope natural gas market planning and procurement activities.
  • Assist in the gas planning, supply, and delivery aspects of clients' natural gas-fired generation projects.
  • Prepare clients' natural gas planning projects, including price forecasts, assessments of market fundamentals, analyzing changing landscape of both national and regional natural gas markets, and provide insight on changing regulations impacting clients' critical planning functions.
  • As needed, evaluate various natural gas supply resources on an economic and risk basis.
  • Provide insights to clients as requested related to specific aspects of the natural gas supply chain that may be creating challenges in procurement or administration of natural gas planning and contracting.
  • Assist clients in contracting across the entire natural gas supply chain from supply contracting through the required transport and related services contracting.
  • Assist clients in evaluating and participating in pipeline expansion projects from initial discussions, through FEED studies, precedent agreements, and eventual service agreements and tariff implementation.
  • Assist clients in procurement and implementation of energy management agreements to administer clients' natural gas contracts.
  • Assist clients in developing, issuing, and administering natural gas related RFPs.
  • Assist clients with price hedging plans and implementation.
  • Assist clients in developing and implementing natural gas risk management policies and procedures.
  • Provide natural gas risk policies and procedural audit services as requested.
  • Leverage experience to grow GDS's current natural gas consulting services to the LDC, industrial, and other market segments.
  • Use common industry modeling to perform detailed analytics.
  • Contribute to consulting projects as required and as driven by business needs and seeking out peer review of material to support delivery of quality client-specific projects.
  • Continuously grow natural gas subject matter expertise by actively contributing to the aforementioned activities and pursuing activities/work in various disciplines and staying abreast of current/hot topics to broaden and build upon subject matter knowledge.
  • Communicate with clients by phone, Teams/Zoom, and prepare and make presentations to clients as part of team effort.

  • Bachelor's degree required with a preference for engineering, statistics, economics, business, or other energy industry-related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working with counterparties, managing projects, including developing project proposals, project plans, and directing project teams.
  • Minimum of 10 years' directly related work experience in the natural gas markets with emphasis on term markets including structured deals.
  • Experience in evaluating and understanding contracting challenges, pricing uncertainty, and regulatory challenges.
  • Experience with NAESB contracts, NYMEX, and basis pricing.
  • Experience with both intrastate and interstate pipelines a plus.
  • Developing and maintaining rapport with clients.
  • Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Work effectively with internal teams.
  • Solid problem-solving, judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications required (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
