Job description

Position Summary
As a member of the Consumables Operations Leadership Team, the Director, Consumables Technical Operations is a key leadership position responsible for managing programs and processes across the Consumables Operations Network including Process Engineering, Capital Projects, Maintenance and Reliability, New Product Introduction, Insourcing, and Sustaining/Continuous Improvement Engineering. This role will lead a network-level technical capability team to accelerate problem solving, improve plant performance, and establish engineering and reliability foundations needed for a scalable, high-performing manufacturing network.
Collaboration with stakeholders including site engineering/maintenance/facilities, manufacturing operations, and R&D is critical to support the engineering strategy, program oversite, and project pipeline. This role will be expected to develop and coach engineering leaders and engineers throughout the Consumables Operations Network.
Remote based role with up to 75% travel
What You'll do as a Director, Engineering
  • Set priorities and governance for the team, and deploy team resources and core competencies across manufacturing facilities as needed for reactive plant support, ensuring delivery of objectives and KPIs:
    • Triage plant performance issues and execute recovery/stabilization plans
    • Investigate and solve chronic or acute technical problems
    • Address process capability, throughput, yield, scrap, downtime, or reliability issues
    • Perform root cause analysis and corrective/countermeasure actions
    • Provide surge support during start-up, scale-up, transfers, or major operational disruption
  • Develop Consumables network-level technical standards and strategies, and lead implementations of strategic plans by leveraging resources and core competencies across manufacturing facilities.
  • Develop, implement, and lead the Process Engineering program across Consumables sites including but not limited to the following elements:
    • Process control, monitoring, and required documentation
    • Process troubleshooting, Non-Conformance/Deviation investigation and technical problem solving methodologies
    • Process safety and risk management
    • Qualified utilities design, operation and maintenance (Classified/Clean Rooms, HVAC/HEPAs, WFI/RO water systems, etc.)
    • New Product Introduction, insourcing, and network/site transfers projects.
    • Quality, compliance, and validation integration
    • Process optimization and continuous improvement (yield, cycle time, process capability
  • Lead/consolidate the Capital Project Engineering program across Consumables sites including but not limited to the following elements:
    • Project pipeline including justification, prioritization, and selection criteria
    • Program/project governance and lifecycle management
    • Adherence to engineering design standards
    • Project scope, cost, schedule, and risk management
    • Procurement, construction, and execution
    • Commissioning, qualification, and validation improvements, etc.)
  • Develop, implement, and lead the Maintenance and Reliability Engineering program across Consumables sites including but not limited to the following elements:
    • Asset strategy and criticality management
    • Reliability engineering and asset uptime management
    • Preventative and predictive maintenance strategy
    • Planning, scheduling, and work execution
    • Spare parts and materials management
    • Maintenance effectiveness/KPI tracking and analysis with intention to continuously improve performance
  • Create strategies and gain buy-in for new architecture, systems, or approaches which have organization-wide or industry-wide impact.
  • Deliver critical, timely communications to leadership. Identifies critical dependences, risks, and contingency plans. Proactively monitors progress, anticipating the effect of dependencies on schedule, cost, etc.
  • Evaluate high profile and/or high impact strategically important engineering projects and lead or support project management activities while fostering and maintaining communication and continuity of strategic direction.
  • Develop and coach team to apply structured, technical problem-solving methodologies such as DMAIC, six sigma green belt/black belt, statistical data analysis, etc. to confirm root causes of problems, and implement countermeasures to prevent recurrence, reduce variation, and drive improvement in quality and other key KPIs.

The Experience, Skills, and Abilities Needed
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline
  • Experience working in manufacturing environment
  • Experience leading / directing an engineering or technical department
  • Capital Equipment/Consumable Products Experience (Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Defense, Aerospace, Medical Devices)
  • Strong project / program management skills required
  • Experience with new product introductions and/or in-sourcing initiatives
  • Experience in LEAN/Six Sigma Methodologies and complex, technical problem solving
  • Experience in evaluating and purchasing capital equipment

Preferred:
  • Masters in engineering discipline, MBA
  • Experience in more than one of the following functional areas: Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality
  • PMP certification
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification
  • Certified Reliability Engineer

  • Must have excellent leadership, interpersonal and influencing skills and have a demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teams. Demonstrated leadership skills including conflict resolution, assertiveness and negotiation skills required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in driving continuous improvement for performance, quality, time, and cost; strong planning and organization skills required.
  • Ability to work in a highly regulated environment.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate within a team-based matrix organization at the executive level in all business functions, levels, and cultures. Experience in successfully coordinating with cross-functional departments (e.g. Legal, Regulatory, Operations, Supply Chain, Scientific Affairs, Marketing, Quality, Service etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound data driven business decisions; Understand, track, drill down and question activities and issues in all functional area. Strong attention to detail, follow-through skills.
    Sets the standard for timeliness, work ethic, and personal integrity.
  • Must have excellent project management skills and have the ability to manage multiple, high priority. situations at once. Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Must have excellent oral communication skills and be able to interact with sales / service / Customers.
  • Must have excellent written communication skills - reports, presentations.

Pay range for this opportunity is $144,500.00 - $187,000.00.This position is eligible for bonus participation.
Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed. Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
