Remote Active Directory Administrator information

Can remote active directory administrator work be done remotely?

Yes, remote Active Directory administrators can perform their duties remotely, often using secure remote access tools and management consoles. Many organizations support remote work for this role, especially with skills in PowerShell, network security, and cloud integration. However, some tasks may require onsite presence or physical access to servers depending on company policies.

Is remote active directory administrator hard to learn?

Remote Active Directory administrators need a solid understanding of Windows Server environments, directory services, and scripting skills. While learning the basics is manageable with training and certifications like Microsoft Certified: Windows Server, advanced tasks require experience and ongoing learning due to the complexity of managing user accounts, permissions, and security policies remotely.

Remote Active Directory administrators typically earn between $70,000 and $110,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and the complexity of the environment. Salaries can vary based on industry, location, and the level of responsibility involved in managing enterprise directory services.

Smarsh

OR • On-site, Remote

$170K - $180K/yr

Full-time

Posted 23 days ago

Job description

Who are we?

Smarsh empowers its customers to manage risk and unleash intelligence in their digital communications. Our growing community of over 6500 organizations in regulated industries counts on Smarsh every day to help them spot compliance, legal or reputational risks in 80+ communication channels before those risks become regulatory fines or headlines.  Relentless innovation has fueled our journey to consistent leadership recognition from analysts like Gartner and Forrester, and our sustained, aggressive growth has landed Smarsh in the annual Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing American companies since 2008.

Smarsh is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator focusing strongly on Identity and Access Management to join our IT Operations team. This role will be the primary hands-on administrator for IAM-related systems - Okta, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365 identity - with deep experience building and maintaining integrations across identity, endpoint, and security tooling (including Vanta, Vectra, CrowdStrike, Netskope, and CyberArk). While IAM is the core focus, this is a broad systems administration role: the ideal candidate is a versatile, senior-level systems professional who can flex into other infrastructure and systems administration work as business needs grow. We're looking for someone who combines deep technical depth in identity with the range to contribute wherever the team needs it most.

Waht will you do?
  • Administer and support Okta integrations (SSO, provisioning, workflows, device trust) across enterprise applications, partnering with the IAM/Okta lead as needed
  • Build, maintain, and troubleshoot integrations between IAM and adjacent systems - identity, endpoint, and security tooling (Vanta, Vectra, CrowdStrike, Netskope, CyberArk) - ensuring reliable data flow and access accuracy across platforms
  • Collaborate and strengthen Active Directory and Microsoft 365 identity infrastructure, including conditional access and identity governance
  • Own Okta device trust configuration and endpoint compliance policies
  • Serve as a senior systems resource across IT Operations, taking on broader systems administration responsibilities beyond IAM as priorities shift (e.g. infrastructure support, endpoint management, other platform administration)
  • Support audits and compliance efforts (e.g. SOC 2, FedRAMP) with IAM evidence and access control documentation
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex identity, access, and systems integration issues escalated from the IT Operations team
  • Document system configurations and integration architecture to support team knowledge continuity
What will you bring?
  • 7+ years of experience in systems administration, with strong hands-on IAM/identity experience
  • Demonstrated experience building, maintaining, and troubleshooting integrations across multiple platforms (Okta, AD, M365, and security/endpoint tooling)
  • Strong background in Okta and Active Directory/Microsoft 365 identity/security administration
  • Experience with modern security tooling (CrowdStrike, Netskope, CyberArk, or similar) and how they intersect with IAM
  • Experience supporting compliance frameworks (SOC 2, FedRAMP, or similar) from a systems/identity perspective
  • Versatility and willingness to take on systems administration work outside of core IAM scope as team needs require
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work cross-functionally with InfoSec and IT Operations
Preferred Qualifications
  • Okta certifications (Certified Administrator, Certified Consultant)
  • Experience with CyberArk PAM implementation or administration
  • Broader systems administration background (servers, endpoint management, networking basics) beyond identity
  • Prior experience in a regulated or compliance-heavy industry
$170,000 - $180,000 a year
The above salary range represents Smarsh's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting. Any applicable bonus programs will be discussed during the recruiting process.

The salary for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, location, specialty and training.

Local cost of living assessments are done for each new hire at the time of offer.
