What is remote accounting?

Remote accounting refers to the practice of performing accounting tasks and managing financial records from a location outside of a traditional office, typically using cloud-based software and digital communication tools. Remote accountants can handle bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, and financial analysis for clients or employers from anywhere with an internet connection. This setup offers flexibility for both the accountant and the company, enabling access to a broader talent pool and often reducing overhead costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Accountant, you need strong knowledge of accounting principles, attention to detail, and a relevant degree or certification such as CPA or CMA. Familiarity with cloud-based accounting software like QuickBooks Online, Xero, or NetSuite, as well as proficiency in Excel, is essential. Excellent time management, communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for effective remote collaboration and meeting deadlines. These skills and qualities enable accurate financial management, regulatory compliance, and efficient teamwork in a virtual work environment.

How does working remotely as an accountant impact collaboration and communication with team members?

Remote accountants often rely on digital tools such as cloud-based accounting software, video conferencing, and project management platforms to collaborate effectively with colleagues and clients. While this setup offers flexibility, it also requires proactive communication and strong organizational skills to ensure deadlines are met and information is accurately shared. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and timely email updates are essential to maintain workflow and team cohesion. Embracing these practices helps remote accountants stay connected and productive despite not being physically present in an office.

Manager, Cross Border Personal Tax

Achen Henderson CPAs

Calgary, AB โ€ข On-site, Remote

Full-time

Posted 28 days ago

Job description

Achen Henderson is growing our Canadian, US, and Cross Border personal tax practice and we're hiring a Manager to help lead it. You'll work closely with our Tax Leader, manage a team, and build real relationships with individuals and families navigating dual filing obligations and residency questions across the border. This role is about deep client service, not just accurate filings, getting to know your clients and becoming a trusted part of their financial life.

We're also investing heavily in AI and modern practice technology, so our team spends less time on manual, repetitive work and more time on the technical and advisory work, and the client relationships, that actually matter.

What you'll do

  • Manage a portfolio of cross-border personal tax clients from intake through filing, building lasting relationships along the way
  • Handle complex investment income, rental income, and rental properties for cross-border clients
  • Review and prepare cross-border filings, including T1, 1040, 1040-NR, T1135, FinCEN 114 (FBAR), Form 8938, foreign tax credit claims (T2209 / Form 1116), treaty-based return positions (Form 8833), Form 2555, Form 8621, Form 3520 / 3520-A, T1161 / T1243, Form 8854, and applicable US state returns
  • Advise clients directly on residency determinations, foreign tax credits, and treaty positions
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team, setting clear expectations, giving regular feedback, and supporting their technical and professional growth
  • Help create and deliver in-house training sessions consistently throughout the year, building shared technical capability across the team
  • Use AI-powered tools to speed up research, drafting, and review, freeing up more time for clients
  • Monitor workflow and deadlines using our cloud-based practice management tools
  • Help refine our client service processes as the practice scales

What you bring

  • CPA designation, with US CPA or progress toward it considered an asset
  • Strong Canadian personal tax experience, along with US personal tax experience, is a must
  • Have been through a few to several busy seasons with an accounting firm
  • Trust and estate experience is a nice to have, not a requirement
  • Experience managing or mentoring a team, or a clear readiness to step into that role
  • A genuine interest in client relationships, not just technical accuracy
  • Comfort working in a cloud-based, AI-enabled environment
  • Experience with CaseWare Hybrid Cloud, TaxCycle, and CCH Axcess is an asset
  • Clear, proactive communication with clients and colleagues

Our culture

We're experts who own our craft and our outcomes, a team of teams that delivers unparalleled results. That shows up in four ways:

  • Own the Craft. We deliver exceptional work with mastery, clarity, and professionalism, timely, accurate, polished, and communicated proactively so nobody is left guessing.
  • Own the Outcome. We're accountable, transparent, and honest. We set clear expectations, meet them, and address obstacles early rather than letting them surprise anyone.
  • Team of Teams. We collaborate across functions, share context openly, and bring in the right expertise at the right moment, always with what's best for the client and the firm in mind.
  • Make Meaning. We choose purpose, autonomy, and human connection. Everyone leads, we care for our teammates and clients, and we do work that gives back to our community.

What we offer

  • Paid training and support toward the US CPA and CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program
  • Profit sharing after 1 year, sales commission opportunities after 6 months
  • Flexible and remote work options, based out of our South Calgary office
  • Medical and wellness benefits after 3 months, including an HSA
