Remote abstractors are professionals who review, analyze, and summarize data or records—such as medical records, legal documents, or real estate files—from a remote location. They extract key information and enter it into databases or reports according to specific guidelines. Working remotely allows them to perform these tasks without being physically present at the facility or office where the original documents are stored. Remote abstractors typically work in fields like healthcare, law, and real estate, and must have strong attention to detail and data management skills.

What does a remote abstractor do?

A remote abstractor can work in multiple fields, such as real estate or medicine. Your responsibilities in this work from home position in real estate include reviewing and examining deeds, leases, and other legal records and documentation, summarizing title-related information, verifying ownership of a property, and obtaining relevant plans and maps. The duties of this abstract professional in the medical field include examining medical record data and documents, exploring a patient’s chart and other EMR information, looking at clinical information, and filtering out duplicate records. You also assess abstracts and code records of all discharged patients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote abstractor?

To thrive as a Remote Abstractor, you need sharp analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in legal or medical records, often supported by relevant certifications or experience in records abstraction. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, abstraction software, and data management tools is typically required. These competencies ensure the accurate and efficient extraction of essential data, maintaining compliance and supporting organizational decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by remote abstractors, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote abstractors often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of documents, maintaining accuracy under tight deadlines, and staying updated on changing industry guidelines. To manage these effectively, it's important to establish a well-organized workflow, use reliable document management software, and maintain regular communication with your team and supervisors. Prioritizing tasks and setting clear goals can help prevent overwhelm, while ongoing training ensures you stay current with best practices and regulations.

American Data Network

Little Rock, AR • Remote

Contractor

Re-posted 13 days ago

Job description

Why ADN? Join the American Data Network family and become part of an established, purpose-driven healthcare quality organization with more than 30 years of experience. At ADN, our work supports hospitals and healthcare clients in improving quality, patient safety, and clinical outcomes. We value integrity, accuracy, collaboration, and professionalism, and we are looking for experienced abstractors who take pride in producing high-quality work.

Position Summary: American Data Network is seeking experienced VQI Registry Abstractors to support accurate and timely vascular registry abstraction for assigned healthcare clients. This role is ideal for candidates with recent, hands-on VQI abstraction experience who can independently review clinical documentation, apply registry specifications, and meet assigned deadlines with a high level of accuracy.

This is not a general data entry position. Candidates must have direct healthcare registry, clinical chart review, quality reporting, or data abstraction experience specific to VQI Registry.

Position Details: ADN hires both contractors and full-time employees for Data Abstraction roles. Contractors must be available for a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviews patient medical records and abstracts data for the VQI Registry.
  • Applies registry specifications, definitions, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and abstraction guidelines accurately and consistently.
  • Interprets clinical documentation related to vascular procedures, diagnoses, treatments, outcomes, complications, and related quality measures.
  • Enters accurate and complete data into assigned registry platforms, EHRs, vendor tools, or other data collection systems.
  • Maintains a high level of abstraction accuracy, completeness, and attention to detail.
  • Meets assigned productivity expectations, weekly progress goals, and internal and client deadlines.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities, including feedback, correction, validation, and IRR reviews.
  • Communicates professionally with account leads, team members, and client contacts when clarification is needed.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and complies with ADN, client, HIPAA, and data security requirements.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • At least 2 years of recent VQI Registry abstraction experience.
  • Ability to independently abstract VQI cases using registry specifications and clinical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare quality reporting, registry abstraction, clinical documentation review, and medical record interpretation.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Comfort working in multiple EHRs, registry platforms, vendor tools, and data collection systems as assigned.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Contractors must have high-speed secure internet, a PC or laptop, and at least two monitors.

Preferred:

  • Experience using the VQI application, VQI reports, and/or other related data collection tools.
  • Experience with IRR, QA review, audit validation, and/or abstraction accuracy review.

Screening & Onboarding: Qualified candidates will complete an initial phone screen and a VQI-specific abstraction assessment. The assessment is designed to evaluate understanding of registry specifications, abstraction judgment, accuracy, and completion speed.

ADN does not provide VQI abstraction training, so candidates should already have the registry experience needed for the role. After hire, ADN provides onboarding to ADN processes, client systems, EHR access, documentation tendencies, and other client-specific workflows.

Why This Role May Be a Good Fit: This position may be a strong fit for experienced VQI abstractors who enjoy independent work, flexible scheduling, registry-based chart review, healthcare quality reporting, and contributing to meaningful work that supports hospitals and patient care. ADN offers a knowledgeable and supportive team environment, multiple registry opportunities, and potential growth into lead or expanded quality roles for strong performers.
