Remote 3D Printer information

What are some common challenges faced when operating 3D printers remotely, and how can they be addressed?

Operating 3D printers remotely often involves challenges such as managing unexpected print failures, ensuring consistent print quality, and maintaining effective communication with the onsite team. To address these issues, remote operators typically rely on high-quality webcams, printer monitoring software, and clear protocols for troubleshooting and reporting problems. Building a strong relationship with on-site staff is also crucial for resolving hardware issues that cannot be handled remotely and for ensuring smooth workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote 3D Printer Operator, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote 3D Printer Operator, you need a solid understanding of additive manufacturing processes, CAD software proficiency, and experience with various 3D printing technologies, usually supported by relevant technical education or certifications. Familiarity with slicing software, remote monitoring systems, and troubleshooting tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and clear communication are vital soft skills for managing tasks independently and collaborating remotely. These skills ensure high-quality output, efficient workflow, and successful remote coordination in 3D printing operations.

What are Remote 3D Printers?

Remote 3D printers are 3D printing devices that can be controlled, monitored, and managed from a distance using internet-connected software or platforms. This allows users to send print jobs, adjust settings, and check progress without being physically present near the printer. Remote 3D printing is especially useful for businesses, educators, and hobbyists who need to manage multiple printers or operate them in different locations. It increases efficiency and flexibility, enabling users to maximize printer uptime and productivity.

Job description

Job Description:

The Advanced Visualization Engineering Internship provides hands-on experience supporting Intermountain Health's IMPACT Center, a specialized engineering team focused on patient-specific care, advanced visualization, medical device development, digital healthcare innovation, and additive manufacturing technologies. Interns contribute directly to clinical and operational initiatives involving 3D printing, biomedical engineering, digital workflow transformation, medical imaging, patient-specific modeling, and emerging healthcare technologies.
This position is designed to provide meaningful real-world experience while supporting production, operational, research, and implementation activities across multiple clinical specialties. Preference will be given to Master's and PhD students pursuing Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, or closely related engineering disciplines with research or practical experience in computational modeling, fluid mechanics, cardiovascular modeling, medical devices, additive manufacturing, advanced visualization, or patient-specific healthcare technologies.

This position is on-site and is not eligible for hybrid or remote work.

Schedule: The position offers some flexibility up to 40 hours per week, with an expected commitment of 30-40 hours during standard business hours (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM). Occasional support outside standard hours, including holidays or weekends, may be required to support operational needs, production deadlines, or time-sensitive clinical requests.

*Preferred skills include:

  • 3D Printing, additive manufacturing, and CAD applied to anatomical simulation and modeling for patient specialized applications
  • In a graduate engineering program pursuing Biomedical, Biomechanical, Mechanical, or Computational Engineering
  • Medical Device Design and Prototyping
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Fluid Mechanics research or practical experience

The Advanced Visualization Engineering Intern supports the IMPACT Center's clinical, operational, and innovation activities through participation in biomedical engineering, patient-specific care, advanced visualization, additive manufacturing, and digital healthcare initiatives. Interns work closely with engineers, clinicians, and operational stakeholders to support production workflows, research activities, quality processes, and implementation of new technologies.

Responsibilities may include support of advanced visualization and patient specific surgical planning, medical device development, digital impressions, 3D printing, post-processing, equipment maintenance, quality documentation, workflow optimization, and technology validation activities. Interns may also participate in research, development, and evaluation of emerging technologies, including computational modeling, biomechanics, fluid dynamics, advanced visualization, and patient-specific engineering applications.

Strong preference for candidates with research or practical experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), fluid mechanics, cardiovascular modeling, biomedical analysis, additive manufacturing, engineering simulation, medical device development, or advanced design methodologies are encouraged to apply.

Job Essentials
  • Supports operational, production, and implementation projects across the Advanced Visualization Engineering program.
  • Assists with 3D printing, additive manufacturing, post-processing, equipment maintenance, quality documentation, and workflow execution activities.

  • Participates in eligible portions of the engineering initiatives under guidance.

  • Supports data collection, technical documentation, process improvement, validation, and quality management activities. Assists with evaluation and implementation of new technologies, workflows, and service offerings.

  • Participates in assigned projects related to biomedical engineering, computational modeling, additive manufacturing, CFD, or advanced visualization technologies.

  • Demonstrates accountability for assigned tasks, project deliverables, and timeline commitments.

  • Maintains accurate records, documentation, and operational procedures in accordance with department standards.

  • Actively participates in team knowledge-sharing activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Research or practical experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), fluid mechanics, cardiovascular modeling, or engineering fluids simulation
  • Experience with CAD software, 3D design, additive manufacturing, or rapid prototyping required
  • Experience with ANSYS, SimVascular, Materialise or similar engineering software preferred
  • Experience with medical device development, product design, validation, or quality systems preferred
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Interest in applying engineering principles to patient-specific care, medical devices, advanced visualization, healthcare innovation, and clinical technology development
