Remote 3D Modeling information

What is remote 3D modeling?

Remote 3D modeling is the process of creating three-dimensional digital representations of objects, environments, or characters using specialized software, while working from a location outside of a traditional office or studio. Remote 3D modelers collaborate with clients and teams via the internet, sharing files, feedback, and updates online. This role is common in industries like gaming, film, architecture, and product design, allowing professionals to contribute their expertise from anywhere in the world. Remote 3D modeling requires strong technical skills, a reliable computer, and effective communication tools.

How do remote 3D modeling professionals typically collaborate with design and development teams?

Remote 3D modeling professionals often work closely with design, engineering, and development teams using cloud-based collaboration tools and version control systems. Regular video meetings, shared project management platforms, and detailed feedback cycles help ensure that models align with project requirements and deadlines. Clear communication and organized file sharing are key to overcoming the challenges of remote work, allowing team members to efficiently review, revise, and approve 3D assets. Building strong virtual relationships can also enhance collaboration and workflow efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote 3D modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote 3D Modeler, you need strong artistic abilities, a solid understanding of geometry and spatial reasoning, and proficiency in 3D modeling principles, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Expertise in technical tools such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, or ZBrush, along with familiarity with file formats and rendering engines, is typically required. Exceptional communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating remotely and managing independent workloads. These skills ensure the creation of high-quality models, effective teamwork across distances, and successful project delivery in a remote work environment.

What is the difference between Remote 3D Modeling vs Remote 3D Animation?

AspectRemote 3D ModelingRemote 3D Animation
Primary FocusCreating 3D models and assets for various industriesAdding movement and visual effects to 3D models
Skills RequiredModeling, texturing, CAD software proficiencyModeling, rigging, keyframing, rendering
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, gaming, product visualizationFilm, gaming, advertising, visual effects
Certifications3D modeling certifications (e.g., Autodesk, Blender)Animation courses, motion graphics certifications

Remote 3D Modeling focuses on creating static or animated 3D assets, while Remote 3D Animation emphasizes bringing those models to life through movement and effects. Both roles often require similar software skills and certifications but serve different creative purposes within the digital industry.

Can I make money with remote 3D modeling?

Remote 3D modeling is a viable way to earn income, especially for freelancers and independent contractors who work on projects for clients in industries like gaming, animation, architecture, and product design. Success depends on skills, portfolio quality, and experience with tools like Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max, as well as building a strong client network. Many remote 3D modelers earn income through project-based work, hourly rates, or retainer agreements.

Can you work remotely as a 3D modeler?

Yes, remote 3D modeling jobs are common, especially in industries like gaming, animation, and product design. Many employers and freelance platforms offer remote opportunities that require proficiency in software such as Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max, along with good communication skills and a strong portfolio.

Is remote 3D modeling still in demand?

Remote 3D modeling remains in demand across industries such as gaming, film, architecture, and product design. Skilled 3D artists proficient in software like Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max are sought after, especially as remote work becomes more accepted and digital collaboration tools improve.

Job description

About the Role

We're building out a small, high-impact software engineering team solving hard, foundational problems in computational geometry. This is a rare opportunity to do deep technical work at the intersection of math, physics, and 3D computer graphics — with real ownership on a lean, fast-moving team.

What You'll Work On

  • Core geometry algorithms involving mesh processing, B-rep/NURBS modeling, and polygon/solid modeling
  • Spatial data structures and algorithms (BVH, octree/quadtree, ray tracing/casting, collision detection)
  • Building tools and systems that translate complex 3D shapes and surfaces into precise, production-ready outputs

What We're Looking For

  • Strong proficiency in C++ (Rust experience is a plus, though not required)
  • Real depth in computational geometry — experience working with meshes, B-rep, NURBS, or similar 3D/geometric modeling concepts
  • Solid algorithmic foundation — of the three (programming, computational geometry, and algorithms), algorithm depth matters most
  • Background can come from any industry — aerospace, defense, gaming, medical/dental modeling, VFX, CAD/CAM, or similar — we care about the depth of your geometry and algorithm work, not which industry it came from

Work Arrangement

  • Remote or Hybird

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency required

You should be proficient in:

  • CAD/CAM Software
  • 3d modeling
  • b-rep
  • c++
  • Applied Mathematics

Machines & technologies you'll use:

  • 3D Modeling
