Job description

About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer at NinjaOne, you are a highly experienced and influential engineer who plays a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction of the company. Operating with greater autonomy than a Senior Engineer, you are a key decision-maker trusted to tackle complex, high-impact projects that span multiple teams — ensuring technical excellence and driving best practices across your domain.

You'll take ownership of large-scale technical initiatives, ensuring that software architecture is scalable, maintainable, and aligned with business goals. You'll proactively address challenges, mentor engineers, and play a significant role in setting technical standards and best practices across the organization.

As part of a team of engineers and technology experts, you'll deliver mission-critical services that help our customers manage, protect, and maintain millions of endpoints and servers — designing and developing high-availability software systems that support our global operations.

We are hiring for Staff Level candidates across multiple product teams! You will have an opportunity to learn about each team during your initial Recruiter interview or when speaking with a VP of Engineering in the interview process.

Location - We are flexible on remote working from home, if you are located in the USA and reside in one of the following states - CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, *IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NC, NY, OH, OR, TN, TX, VA, and WA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL, if you prefer a hybrid option.

We hire the best software engineers, but experience in our stack can’t hurt: NinjaOne is built on Java, Kotlin, C++, Golang and Postgres; supporting millions of user endpoints and running as a scalable cloud service in AWS.  Knowing large-scale datastore bottlenecks, asynchronous application design and client-server architecture will help you.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Technical Leadership & Architecture: Influence critical architectural decisions and oversee the implementation of complex technical solutions. Bring deep expertise in system design to ensure the long-term sustainability and scalability of our software systems, balancing technical debt, performance concerns, and business needs.
  • Autonomous Decision-Making: Operate with a high degree of independence, trusted to make high-impact technical choices with minimal oversight. You are a go-to voice for evaluating trade-offs and setting direction across your domain.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product, infrastructure, and engineering teams to drive alignment on technical decisions and ensure solutions are both practical and forward-looking.
  • Mentorship & Standards: Mentor and elevate engineers across the organization, providing guidance on best practices and helping establish technical standards that raise the bar for the entire engineering team.
  • Ownership of Large-Scale Initiatives: Take full ownership of complex, multi-team technical initiatives — proactively identifying challenges, driving resolutions, and incorporating insights from customer support and operational data.
  • Quality Advocacy: Champion and implement quality assurance practices, ensuring the delivery of robust, high-performance software that meets the high expectations of our customers.
  • Other duties as needed

About You

  • 12+ years of experience in Java software development, particularly for product applications.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and operating highly scalable systems.
  • Proven experience solving complex system design challenges at scale.
  • Expertise in API design and RESTful services, with experience using frameworks like Spring (Spring Boot) or Jersey.
  • Strong command of object-oriented programming (OOP) design principles and practices.
  • Proficient in relational database design and development.
  • 2+ years of experience with Kotlin is a plus.
  • Experience with caching systems, particularly Redis, is a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of quality testing practices and a track record of delivering high-quality software.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.
