Religious Director Islam information

What is a religious director Islam?

Religious Directors in Islam, often called Imams or Islamic religious leaders, are responsible for leading prayers, providing spiritual guidance, and overseeing religious education within a Muslim community or institution. They organize religious services, teach Islamic principles, conduct ceremonies like weddings and funerals, and offer counseling to community members. Religious Directors may also engage in interfaith activities, represent the Muslim community, and ensure that religious practices adhere to Islamic teachings. Their role is central to maintaining and nurturing the spiritual well-being of their community.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a religious director Islam, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Religious Director in Islam, you need deep knowledge of Islamic teachings, jurisprudence, and leadership skills, typically supported by advanced Islamic studies or a relevant degree. Familiarity with community management tools, religious education platforms, and sometimes certification from recognized Islamic institutions is important. Compassion, strong communication, and cultural sensitivity help foster positive relationships within diverse communities. These skills ensure that religious guidance is accurate, community needs are met, and the organization is led with integrity and respect.

What are some common challenges faced by a religious director Islam, and how can they be addressed?

A Religious Director in an Islamic organization often navigates challenges such as balancing diverse community expectations, managing intergenerational differences, and ensuring that religious guidance remains relevant to contemporary issues. Building strong communication channels and fostering inclusivity within the community can help address these challenges. Additionally, collaborating closely with other religious leaders, educators, and community members promotes unity and ensures that programming meets the spiritual and educational needs of all congregants.

Reports To: Religious Director

Al Falah Center is a vibrant Islamic community center in Bridgewater, New Jersey, dedicated to building faith, inspiring service, and strengthening community. Guided by the Qurโ€™an and Sunnah, we promote the timeless values of Islam โ€” justice, unity, and compassion โ€” while fostering a welcoming, spiritually uplifting, and inclusive environment for families of all backgrounds. Our work spans worship, education, and charitable service, with a special commitment to preparing the next generation of American Muslim leaders.

Position Overview

Al Falah Center is seeking a knowledgeable, approachable, and dedicated Full-Time Imam & Qurโ€™an Academy Director to lead our congregation in prayer and to grow our Qurโ€™an memorization (Hifz) program. Reporting to the Religious Director, this person will lead daily vocalized prayers, oversee and expand the academy, manage and mentor a team of teachers, and teach students directly.

We are looking for someone who blends structure and discipline with a warm, motivating presence โ€” someone who connects naturally with children, youth, and families and is committed to building a strong, Qurโ€™an-centered culture for our growing community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the daily congregational jahriyya (vocalized) prayers โ€” Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha โ€” with accurate, beautiful, and inspiring recitation.
  • Lead Taraweeh during Ramadan (20 rakโ€™ahs nightly), completing the Qurโ€™an by the 29th.
  • Partner with the Religious Director on seasonal and community programs โ€” Qurโ€™an nights, competitions, Tafsir sessions, youth reminders, and family education.
  • Oversee the Hifz program end to end: curriculum, quality, student growth, and continuous improvement.
  • Assess, train, mentor, and evaluate Qurโ€™an teachers to uphold a high standard of instruction across the academy.
  • Maintain organized administrative records, using technology to track attendance, memorization progress, and academic development.
Teaching & Student Engagement
  • Teach Hifz with proper tajweed, ensuring accurate recitation and pronunciation.
  • Adapt instruction to all levels, from beginners to advanced memorizers.
  • Keep students engaged, motivated, and steadily progressing in their Qurโ€™anic journey.
  • Substitute in Nazirah (Qurโ€™an reading) classes as needed.
Family Communication & Progress Tracking
  • Evaluate student progress through regular assessments and provide clear, structured feedback.
  • Build collaborative relationships with parents through consistent communication and progress updates.
Qualifications Required
  • Qurโ€™an Mastery: Complete memorization of the Qurโ€™an (แธคฤfiแบ“).
  • Certification: Ijazah in at least one mode (qiraโ€™ah) of recitation.
  • Tajweed: Excellent recitation with proper tajweed and the ability to teach formal tajweed texts.
  • Education: Bachelorโ€™s degree or diploma in Qurโ€™anic Studies, Islamic Studies, Religious Education, Arabic, or a related field.
  • Teaching Experience: 5+ years, ideally across children, youth, and adults.
  • Leadership Experience: Managing a team or educational program, including teacher development and curriculum design.
  • Language: Fluency in English.
  • Work Authorization: Authorized to work in the United States [or note if visa sponsorship is available].
  • Background Check: Ability to pass a background check, as the role involves working with minors.
Preferred
  • Proficiency in Arabic and/or Urdu [or another community language].
  • Comfort using modern technology for instruction, attendance tracking, and program administration.
Personal Attributes
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • A friendly, approachable personality that connects naturally with students and families while maintaining structure and discipline.
  • Dependable, professional, and committed to the spiritual and academic growth of the community.
