Job Description Summary:
As a Manager, Cloud Engineering at Modernizing Medicine, you will lead a team of highly skilled Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) to ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of our AWS cloud infrastructure and services. Your leadership will be crucial in driving the adoption of site reliability engineering principles, optimizing costs, and automating processes. You will oversee the team's efforts to align with strategic goals, delivering exceptional value through cloud-native technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Leadership and Strategy:
    • Lead the Cloud Engineering team, setting strategic direction and priorities to ensure reliability, scalability, and performance of cloud services.
    • Develop and execute a roadmap for cloud infrastructure that aligns with business goals and incorporates industry-standard SRE practices.
    • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and cost-consciousness within the team.

  • Infrastructure and Automation:
    • Oversee the architecture and management of secure, scalable cloud infrastructure and services, focusing on automation, reliability, and proactive cost management.
    • Ensure the implementation and refinement of observability and monitoring solutions using DataDog, promoting proactive issue identification and efficient resource utilization.
    • Guide the development, maintenance, and optimization of CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins, integrating AWS services to enhance development workflows and infrastructure automation.
    • Lead efforts in containerization and orchestration of applications using Kubernetes, enhancing scalability, deployment efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Performance and Cost Management:
    • Monitor application and infrastructure performance in AWS, applying tuning and optimizations to ensure optimal resource utilization and user experience while managing costs.
    • Design and manage disaster recovery and backup strategies on AWS, prioritizing data integrity, system availability, and cost efficiency.

  • Security and Compliance:
    • Ensure strict adherence to AWS security standards and compliance with data protection regulations, with a keen eye on cost implications.

  • Team Development:
    • Mentor and support junior and mid-level team members, fostering a culture of learning, collaboration, and cost-consciousness.
    • Promote professional growth and development within the team, providing guidance and opportunities for skill enhancement.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and deliver AWS-based solutions that meet business objectives efficiently and cost-effectively.
    • Facilitate communication and collaboration between SREs and other teams to ensure seamless integration of cloud services.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Cloud Engineering, or a similar role, with at least 5 years in a leadership position.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing cloud environments (preferably in AWS), with hands-on experience in observability platforms such as DataDog.
  • Proficiency in automation and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) and infrastructure as code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
  • Extensive experience with CI/CD tools, notably Jenkins, and familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies like Kubernetes.
  • Strong understanding of networking, cloud security best practices, performance optimization, and cost management strategies.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to guide teams through complex operational challenges and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to implementing industry-standard site reliability principles and a proactive approach to cost management in daily operations.

Working Conditions:
  • This role allows for significant flexibility in work location, being hybrid/virtual. However, occasional visits to the office may be required.
  • Participation in on-call rotations may be required to address high-priority issues outside of standard work hours.
