How much do reliability engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for reliability engineering in St. Paul, MN is $119,315.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $103,700.00 and $130,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reliability engineer?

To thrive as a Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, data analysis, and problem-solving, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with reliability analysis tools (such as Weibull Analysis, FMEA), statistical software, and certifications like Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and collaborative skills help Reliability Engineers effectively work with cross-functional teams and convey technical findings. These skills and qualifications are crucial for minimizing system failures, optimizing maintenance strategies, and ensuring long-term operational efficiency.

What is reliability engineering?

Reliability engineering is a field of engineering that focuses on ensuring systems, components, or products consistently perform their intended function without failure over a specified period. Reliability engineers analyze data, design tests, and implement processes to improve product durability and reduce the likelihood of failures. Their work often spans across product design, manufacturing, and maintenance to enhance safety, performance, and customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Reliability Engineering vs Maintenance Engineering?

AspectReliability EngineeringMaintenance Engineering
FocusDesigning systems for reliability and minimizing failuresMaintaining and repairing existing equipment to ensure operational uptime
CertificationsReliability Engineering certifications, Six Sigma, engineering degreesMaintenance certifications, HVAC, electrical, or mechanical licenses
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, project planning, analysis labsOn-site equipment, repair shops, plant floors
Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, energy, oil & gasManufacturing, facilities management, utilities

Reliability Engineering focuses on designing and improving systems to prevent failures, while Maintenance Engineering emphasizes repairing and maintaining equipment to ensure continuous operation. Both roles are essential in industries like manufacturing and energy, but they differ in their approach—one is proactive, the other reactive.

How does a reliability engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve system reliability?

Reliability Engineers work closely with design, maintenance, operations, and quality teams to identify potential failure points and implement preventive measures. They often facilitate root-cause analyses after incidents, share findings with relevant departments, and help develop long-term solutions to recurring problems. Collaboration involves regular meetings, data sharing, and coordinating reliability improvement projects to ensure that all teams are aligned in enhancing system performance and reducing downtime.

How much do reliability engineers get paid?

Reliability engineers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, industry, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in data analysis, failure modes, and maintenance strategies can command higher salaries, often exceeding $120,000 annually.

What does a reliability engineer do?

A reliability engineer focuses on ensuring that systems, equipment, or products perform consistently and without failure over time. They analyze failure data, develop maintenance strategies, and implement testing procedures to improve reliability, often using tools like FMEA and root cause analysis. This role typically requires strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of engineering principles.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Reliability EngineerJob Description

The Senior Reliability Engineer develops and executes reliability engineering programs that ensure products meet stringent performance, safety, and regulatory expectations. This role leads technical reliability studies, supports post-market activities, and drives continuous improvement across product design and processes, with a particular focus on ECLS products. The engineer works cross-functionally to analyze complex data, identify root causes, and recommend design or process changes that improve product reliability and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, coordinate, and conduct technical reliability studies and evaluations of engineering design concepts, including the design and execution of Design of Experiments (DOE).
  • Recommend design or test methods and statistical process control procedures to achieve required levels of product reliability.
  • Complete risk analysis studies for new designs and processes to ensure they meet internal, customer, and regulatory reliability objectives.
  • Compile and analyze performance reports and process control statistics to identify and evaluate variables that may affect product and process performance.
  • Ensure that corrective and preventive actions meet acceptable reliability standards and are effectively implemented.
  • Analyze preliminary plans and develop reliability engineering programs that support company, customer, and governmental agency requirements.
  • Develop mathematical models, when appropriate, to identify units, batches, or processes that present excessive failure risks.
  • Propose changes in design, formulation, or processes to improve system and process reliability based on analytical findings.
  • Determine units and batches that require environmental or other specialized testing and specify the minimum number of samples required to obtain statistically valid data.
  • Lead and support complaint trending activities to identify patterns, emerging issues, and opportunities for improvement in ECLS products.
  • Perform post-market change assessments to evaluate the reliability and quality impact of design, process, or manufacturing changes.
  • Conduct issue investigations, including detailed root cause analysis, and drive resolution plans for post-market and quality-related problems.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, quality, and other stakeholders, to align on reliability requirements and solutions.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, concise technical reports and presentations for Senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers and vendors to exchange technical information, status updates, and recommendations.
  • Coach, guide, and mentor lower-level professionals, providing technical direction and feedback as needed.
  • Manage and deliver projects from design through implementation, ensuring adherence to policies, procedures, and industry standards.
  • Identify and implement process, system, or product improvements that enhance reliability performance and efficiency within the job area.
  • Apply working knowledge of relevant industry standards, specification development, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to support design and testing activities.
  • Balance multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, managing priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment.

  • Advanced knowledge of reliability engineering principles and practices, combining breadth and depth of expertise.
  • Experience in medical device design and application of relevant test standards.
  • Experience applying statistical methods to design reliability, process capability, and data analysis.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple tasks or projects concurrently.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy in technical work and documentation.
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally and operate as an effective team player.
  • Practical knowledge of project management, including planning, execution, and oversight of engineering or quality projects.
  • Working knowledge of appropriate industry standards relevant to reliability and quality.
  • Ability to conduct complaint trending, post-market change assessments, and issue investigations, including root cause analysis.
  • Ability to exert influence and build consensus across teams without alienating others.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline is strongly preferred.
  • Certified Quality Engineer, Reliability Engineer, or equivalent professional certification is desired.
