What Does a Reliability Engineer Do?

As a reliability engineer, your duties are to test and evaluate the manufacturing of products and components and ensure that the procedures are efficient and do not lead to abnormally high maintenance or operational costs. Your other responsibilities are to find solutions to product reliability risks. You may manage risk in a supply chain, develop loss prevention strategies, and track the entire lifecycle of product development, from building prototypes to moving a product into full-scale production. You analyze information from department heads and recommend strategies to reduce risk and ensure that the product works reliably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, failure analysis, and reliability modeling, typically with a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as FMEA, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) software, and certifications like Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure systems are dependable, downtime is minimized, and organizational performance and safety are optimized.

What are some typical challenges Reliability Engineers face when implementing preventive maintenance strategies?

Reliability Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing preventive maintenance schedules with production demands, ensuring buy-in from operations teams, and accurately predicting equipment failures. They must analyze large sets of historical data to identify trends and root causes, which can be complex in facilities with diverse machinery. Collaboration with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams is essential to develop effective strategies that minimize downtime while optimizing resources.

What are Reliability Engineers?

Reliability Engineers are professionals responsible for ensuring that systems, equipment, or processes function consistently and efficiently over time. They analyze data, identify potential points of failure, and develop maintenance strategies to improve system reliability and minimize downtime. Their work spans various industries, including manufacturing, energy, and technology, and often involves collaborating with design, operations, and maintenance teams. By implementing reliability-centered maintenance and predictive analysis, they help organizations save costs and increase safety.

What engineers make $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering, or software engineering with senior roles and advanced skills can earn $500,000 or more annually. These roles often require extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership responsibilities, typically in industries with high profit margins or complex technical demands.

What is the difference between Reliability Engineer vs Maintenance Engineer?

AspectReliability EngineerMaintenance Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires engineering degree, certifications in reliability or asset managementOften requires engineering or technical diploma, certifications in maintenance or equipment repair
Work EnvironmentFocuses on analysis, design, and improvement of systems for reliabilityHands-on maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of equipment
Industry UsageCommon in manufacturing, energy, aerospace, and industrial sectorsPrevalent in manufacturing, facilities, and industrial plants

Reliability Engineers focus on designing and improving systems to prevent failures, using data analysis and modeling. Maintenance Engineers perform hands-on repairs and upkeep of equipment to ensure operational continuity. While both roles aim to optimize equipment performance, Reliability Engineers work proactively on system reliability, whereas Maintenance Engineers handle reactive and scheduled maintenance tasks.

Job description

Job Title: Reliability Engineer
Job Description

The Reliability Engineer supports and enhances manufacturing equipment reliability through part obsolescence management, technical research, upgrade planning, and project coordination. This role evaluates mechanical and electrical components for availability, compatibility, replacement options, and long-term supportability, with a strong focus on CNC, PLC, and manual machinery. Working closely with maintenance, engineering, suppliers, and project stakeholders, the Reliability Engineer identifies at-risk components, develops replacement strategies, maintains technical documentation, and supports equipment upgrade implementation. The position is hands-on and suited for a self-driven individual who takes ownership of assignments, is eager to learn, and collaborates effectively within a team.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate mechanical and electrical equipment issues and identify failed or at-risk components that may impact manufacturing reliability.
  • Review mechanical, electrical, and assembly drawings to accurately identify repair and replacement parts.
  • Support the planning, scheduling, and implementation of component upgrades and equipment improvement projects to enhance equipment performance and uptime.
  • Track project milestones, follow-up items, vendor deliverables, and implementation schedules to ensure projects remain on time and within scope.
  • Recommend new technologies and replacement strategies to improve long-term equipment supportability and reduce obsolescence risk.
  • Perform project planning and management activities, including defining scope, timelines, and resource needs for reliability and upgrade projects.
  • Coordinate communications and follow-up meetings with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and align on solutions.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including equipment records, parts lists, and upgrade documentation to support ongoing maintenance and future projects.
  • Provide process support and troubleshooting guidance to maintenance and production teams for CNC, PLC, and manual machines.
  • Contribute to process improvements by identifying recurring issues, proposing corrective actions, and supporting implementation of reliability-focused initiatives.
Essential Skills
  • Proven experience in reliability engineering with a focus on manufacturing equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC, PLC, and manual machines in a production environment.
  • Experience performing preventative and corrective maintenance on manufacturing equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, assembly drawings, and machine documentation.
  • Experience coordinating vendors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical and logistical issues.
  • Project planning and project management skills, including scheduling and tracking tasks and milestones.
  • Experience with CMMS, ERP, parts databases, Excel, or similar systems for tracking equipment, parts, and project data.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent practical experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the automotive industry.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a machining environment.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively across maintenance, engineering, and supplier teams.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
  • Experience in project plan execution, process improvements, and project tracking.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Python experience for data analysis or automation is preferred.
  • SharePoint experience for document management and collaboration is preferred.
  • Experience with data automation tools or workflows is an advantage.
  • Background in reliability engineering, including obsolescence management and long-term supportability planning, is beneficial.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate component options and recommend effective replacement strategies.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing positively to a team environment.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail in managing technical documentation and project activities.
Work Environment

This role operates within a large, high-volume manufacturing facility that produces engines and differentials for a wide range of vehicles. The plant spans more than one million square feet and supports the assembly of various engine types under one roof, contributing to a fast-paced and dynamic production environment. The Reliability Engineer works closely with maintenance, engineering, production, and supplier teams on the shop floor and in office settings, regularly interacting with CNC, PLC, and manual machines and their associated support systems. Work involves hands-on equipment investigations, review of technical documentation, and coordination of upgrades and improvement projects. Standard business hours typically apply, with flexibility required at times to support production schedules, project timelines, and critical equipment issues. The environment emphasizes teamwork, continuous improvement, and long-term equipment reliability, with frequent use of digital tools such as CMMS, ERP systems, Excel, and collaboration platforms.
