Preharvest sprouting (PHS) and the resulting discounts have been a problem in the heart of the Hard Red Spring Wheat region in four of the past seven growing seasons. Low Hagberg Falling Numbers (HFN) result in steeper discounts than any other quality attribute. The HFN test is an indirect measure, always taken after the fact. We are seeking a skilled and dedicated individual who will change how PHS is measured and possibly open the way to predicting when producers face the risk of PHS. This position is housed at the Northwest Research & Outreach Center, Crookston, MN, and will report directly to the projects Principal Investigator.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in seed physiology. The position requires the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and consistently uphold high standards of work ethic, attention to detail, and timeliness.

Key Responsibilities:
(10%) Develop a better understanding of how ripe wheat seed absorbs water under controlled temperatures and relative humidity levels.
(10%) Measure the presence of GA and alpha-amylases over time in partially and completely imbibed harvest-ripe wheat at different controlled temperature and relative humidity regimes.
(20%) Develop and validate a protocol to screen genetic differences among HRSW varieties in PHS tolerance under a controlled optimum temperature and relative humidity regime.
(20%) Develop and validate a protocol to predict the risk of PHS under field conditions.
(40%) Publish findings in relevant scientific journals and develop best management practices to avoid quality losses due to PHS.

Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in seed physiology or related field
Evidence of strong organizational and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in training and supervising undergraduate students

Pay Range: $64,099; depending on education/qualifications/experience
