What is a REI engineer?

A REI Engineer, or Reliability, Engineering, and Infrastructure Engineer, is responsible for ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and maintenance of an organization's technical infrastructure. They focus on designing, implementing, and managing systems to maximize uptime and performance while minimizing downtime and failures. REI Engineers often work with cross-functional teams to monitor system health, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements. Their work is critical in industries where system availability and performance are essential to business operations.

What are some typical challenges faced by REI engineers when working on large-scale renewable energy projects?

REI Engineers often face challenges related to coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing complex project timelines, especially when integrating new technologies. Navigating regulatory requirements, ensuring environmental compliance, and optimizing system performance are also common hurdles. Additionally, effective communication with stakeholders and adapting designs to site-specific conditions are key aspects that require strong problem-solving skills. These challenges provide opportunities to develop technical expertise and leadership abilities within the renewable energy industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reliability engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reliability Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, data analysis, and reliability methodologies, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with reliability analysis software, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), and certifications such as Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are often required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating across teams and addressing complex reliability issues. These skills ensure the development and maintenance of dependable systems, reducing downtime and optimizing operational efficiency.

What is the difference between Rei Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectRei EngineeringMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsTypically requires specialized certifications in engineering design and software toolsRequires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, often with licensure or professional engineer (PE) license
Work EnvironmentOften involves project-based work, design, and development in offices or labsIncludes design, manufacturing, testing, and maintenance in industrial or manufacturing settings
Industry UsagePrimarily used in engineering design firms, tech companies, and product developmentWidely used across manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and energy sectors

Rei Engineering focuses on specialized engineering design and software applications, often requiring specific certifications. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope of design, manufacturing, and maintenance, typically requiring a degree and licensure. Both roles are integral to engineering projects but differ in scope and work environment.

Job description

Imagine what you could do here. At Apple, great ideas have a way of becoming great products, services, and customer experiences very quickly. We are building the next generation of applied data and AI platforms that power Apple’s most critical services, ranging from Music, TV+, Sports, and Search to emerging AI and GenAI-driven experiences.
We are seeking a Senior Product Manager to lead application-layer data and AI capabilities built on top of Apple’s Data Platform. This role focuses on transforming foundational data infrastructure into developer-facing products, intelligent services, and GenAI-enabled workflows that teams can use to build faster, safer, and more scalable applications.
This is a highly technical, cross-functional role working at the intersection of analytics, data engineering, AI/GenAI systems, and product abstraction.
Description
As a Senior Product Manager for Applied Analytics, Data Engineering & AI/GenAI, you will own product capabilities that sit above Apple’s core data platform and turn into platform capability.
You will partner closely with data platform engineering, AI/ML infrastructure, privacy, security, and application teams to design and deliver:
* Application-layer data services and APIs
* Platform intelligence that helps developers troubleshoot and optimize data pipelines.
* AI and GenAI-powered experiences for data creation, transformation, governance, and analysis
* Tooling that enables developers, analysts, and product teams to safely build data-driven and AI-native applications at scale
You will be responsible for defining product vision, shaping multi-quarter roadmaps, and driving execution from concept through launch, while balancing platform constraints, customer needs, and long-term architectural integrity.","responsibilities":"Define and own the product vision and roadmap for application-layer data and AI capabilities built on Apple’s Data Platform.
Translate foundational data and AI infrastructure into clear product abstractions (APIs, workflows, templates, services).
Lead the development of applied AI and GenAI features, including intelligent assistants, reasoning workflows, automation, and decision support for data engineering and analytics use cases.
Partner with engineering teams to align product requirements with platform architecture, scalability, reliability, privacy, and security constraints.
Work closely with internal customer teams to understand real-world application needs and co-develop solutions.
Communicate complex technical tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Drive prioritization across competing demands from multiple products and organizations while maintaining platform consistency.
Measure success through adoption, developer productivity, reliability, and customer impact.
Preferred Qualifications
Deep understanding of data engineering concepts such as ingestion pipelines, transformations, batch and streaming systems, metadata, lineage, and governance.
Experience building or productizing AI/ML or GenAI-powered features
Familiarity with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or similar) and enterprise-scale deployments.
Strong systems thinking and the ability to reason about tradeoffs across performance, cost, reliability, and usability.
Proven ability to influence without authority and build alignment across diverse stakeholder groups.
Comfort operating in ambiguous problem spaces and shaping direction where requirements are not fully defined.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field (Master’s degree preferred).
10+ years of product management experience building enterprise or platform products.
Strong experience working with analytics, data engineering systems, data platforms or large-scale distributed infrastructure.
Demonstrated ability to take products from concept to launch, including vision setting, roadmap ownership, and execution.
Working knowledge of modern data and AI stacks, including cloud-based data platforms and analytics systems.
Pay & Benefits
