Yoga Instructor

NMC Portsmouth, VA

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct patient care - Confer with patient about their medical histories and any problems with stress and/or pain in order to determine whether Yoga Therapy would be helpful. Assess patient’s soft tissue condition, plans that specify which aspect of Yoga Therapy is to be used. Provide patients with information about Yoga techniques for postural improvement, stretching, strengthening, relaxation and rehabilitative exercises.
  • Promote the use of Yoga Therapy in physical activities for fitness and overall wellness, verbal
  • communication and other relaxation techniques to clear, balance and energize the human energy system in order to promote healing for the mind, body and spirit; reassess the energy system and provide patient feedback.
  • Record and maintain treatment records in accordance with specific guidelines and modes of recordkeeping. Refer patients to other types of providers when necessary. Consult with other health care professionals, such as acupuncturists, Healing Touch Practitioners, Massage Therapists, Tai Chi instructors, physiotherapists, chiropractors, physicians, and psychologists in order to develop treatment plans for patients and to discuss current treatments administered to patients. Confer with supervisor concerning any and all occurrences involving patients that require attention. Maintain current and accurate health and attendance records.
  • Provide proper instruction in Yoga mat work and relaxation techniques that is appropriate for the various muscles groups of the body. Provide feedback to participants. Provide accurate instruction in the area of Yoga practice such as various levels of stretching, low impact training and toning including but not limited to: proper movement and alignment, physical stretches, breathing techniques and relaxation techniques for participants of varying levels of fitness, skill and ability. Emphasize importance of mind-body coordination and demonstrate proper posture. Independently monitor class participants to ensure proper use of equipment and proper training/exercise techniques. Interact with class participants and demonstrate exercises or training activities that may include the following: stepping, bending, stretching, full body movement, etc.
  • Follow and enforce Division’s safety practices. Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe
  • circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Use all required safety equipment. Operate any
  • equipment as required by the position. Provide a safe environment for Therapy of techniques and participation of
  • patients. Ensure yoga mats and props used in class are properly sanitized before and after class. Maintain
  • documentation of cleaning activities for Infection Control surveillance.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Registered Yoga Instructor.
  • Possess a minimum of 1-year full-time experience within the last 3 years as a Registered Yoga Teacher as recognized by Yoga Alliance.
  • Possess at least 200 documented hours in formal Yoga training.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
