How much do registered medical coder jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 24, 2026, the average hourly pay for registered medical coder in Georgia is $18.93, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.24 and $20.29 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the 4 types of medical coding?

The four main types of medical coding are ICD (International Classification of Diseases) for diagnoses, CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) for procedures and services, HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) for supplies and equipment, and DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) codes used mainly in mental health. Medical coders must be familiar with these coding systems to ensure accurate billing and documentation. Certification and knowledge of coding guidelines are essential for the role of a Registered Medical Coder.

Is a medical coder still in demand?

Registered medical coders are in consistent demand due to the ongoing need for accurate medical billing and coding in healthcare. The role requires knowledge of coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and job opportunities are expected to grow as healthcare providers prioritize compliance and reimbursement processes.

What is the difference between Registered Medical Coder vs Certified Medical Coder?

AspectRegistered Medical CoderCertified Medical Coder
CertificationsTypically requires RHIT, RHIA, or similar credentialsRequires CPC, CCS, or similar certifications
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, insurance companiesHospitals, outpatient facilities, insurance companies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across healthcare settings for coding and billingCommonly used for medical billing and coding roles

Both Registered Medical Coders and Certified Medical Coders work in healthcare environments, focusing on medical coding and billing. While certifications differ, their roles often overlap, and both are essential for accurate medical record documentation and reimbursement processes.

What kind of medical coder gets paid the most?

Senior medical coders, such as Certified Professional Coders (CPC) with specialized expertise in areas like inpatient hospital coding or surgical coding, tend to earn the highest salaries. Advanced certifications, experience, and working in specialized or high-demand healthcare settings can also increase earning potential for medical coders.

Will AI eventually replace medical coders?

Registered Medical Coders use specialized knowledge to review and assign medical codes based on clinical documentation. While AI tools can assist with coding accuracy and efficiency, human oversight remains essential to interpret complex cases and ensure compliance, making full replacement unlikely in the near future.
