Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Refrigeration Mechanic maintains and repairs complex HVAC and refrigeration systems, including installation, troubleshooting, and calibration. Utilizes diagnostic tools to identify system malfunctions and performs major equipment overhauls, ensuring efficiency and functionality.

  • Installs, troubleshoots, calibrates, services, repairs and maintains heating, refrigeration, and HVAC systems, equipment, instruments and controls using electrical, electronic, pneumatic or digitally controlled systems.
  • Performs major overhauls involving disassembly and inspection of all parts, replacement of defective and worn parts, reassembly of equipment instruments and/or controls.
  • Provides technical assistance to Energy Management System (EMS) technicians in the proper operation, maintenance and repair of complicated HVAC systems.
  • Analyzes the efficiency of campus heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems and recommends actions for improvement.
  • Maintains inventory and records, and orders parts and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications 

  • One year of experience in the installation and repair of central multi-zone air conditioning systems. Journey-level skill equivalent to that acquired through the completion of a refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic's apprenticeship program is required.
  • Progressively responsible experience in the installation, adjustment, maintenance and repair of commercial and domestic refrigeration and air conditioning systems involving modulatory and safety controls, thermostats, humidifiers, and duct stats.
  • A valid California Driver's License is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

  • Advanced knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electronic controls.
  • Skilled in using diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Proficient in performing major system repairs and overhauls.
  • Capability to analyze system efficiency and recommend improvements.
  • Strong customer service and teamwork skills.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver, and more.
  • Classification: 6699 / Air Cond/Refrig Mechanic/ Grade 1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE is $ 5998- $7457 per month, dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $5998 mo - $8737 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.  
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
