KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs analytical testing with strict adherence to standard operating procedures, generating highly accurate and timely results.

  • Conducts routine tests, measurements analyses, and preparations in accordance with established methods and procedures.

  • Operates laboratory equipment as part of testing requirements.

  • Records results of the tests and arranges data for review and analysis.

  • Completes routine calculations and reports.

  • Inputs, submits and receives computer data.

  • Maintains computer databases, runs programs and enters sample and test information into a LIMS.

  • Coordinates chain of custody forms

  • Maintains documentation that samples are received in proper containers and at the required temperature, within the appropriate holding time.

  • Performs calibration and maintenance of equipment.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Understands and adheres to all written analytical and safety Standard Operating Procedures established by MPC.

  • Participate actively in safety meetings, including surfacing hazards/concerns and suggestions for improvement.

  • Dispose of all samples per site procedures.

  • Enter sample results accurately into Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS) as soon as practical and special sample results as soon as obtained.

  • Communicates promptly with internal customers.

  • Conduct routine and non-routine testing on samples used to certify products, prove regulatory compliance, and control the process.

  • Makes proper relief in work area by communicating pending analyses, instrument problems, SQC concerns, operational issues affecting the lab, and off-spec results.

  • Reads e-mail, area notes, and applicable orders as appropriate

  • Operates a motor vehicle in the refinery in accordance with MPC Motor Vehicle Safety and Driving Standard and site requirements.

  • Operates fume hoods and hood sashes per MPC standard.

  • Completes all required training and CBT modules on time.

  • Keeps work areas clean and orderly to maintain a high level of safety and efficiency.

  • Effectively validates results generated prior to reporting.

  • Completes corrective action forms for out-of-control points.

  • Attempts to resolve SQC alarms according to skill level and communicates to appropriate chemist and/or supervisor.

  • Inform lab management personnel when lab supplies are running low.

  • Performs routine maintenance and other lab duties as assigned

  • Records and maintains accurate records of analyses

  • Enters test results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

  • Accurately communicates to the Lab Supervisor any unusual observations made during the analysis of samples.

  • Assists the Chemists and Lab Supervisors in the development of new test procedures as needed.

  • Provides training for new Lab Techs

  • Performs monitoring checks and SQC data to ensure instrument accuracy at the beginning of each shift.

  • Performs any required re-testing and communicates off-specification product results immediately to the Lab Supervisor.

  • Practices site safety and adhere to environmental standards.

  • Participates in lab safety audits

  • Maintains consistent and excellent housekeeping habits.

  • Supports all internal and external laboratory audits.

  • Understands proper labeling and hazard communication procedures.

REQUIREMENTS & PREFERENCES
  • Bachelor's Degree with 16 hours of college-level chemistry required.

  • Two (2) years or more of experience required.

  • Chemistry Degree preferred.

  • Experience in QC/production laboratory in petroleum refining or petrochemical industry preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Familiarity with ASTM laboratory test methods for petroleum analyses.

  • Effective communication, written and verbal.

  • Familiarity with the oil refining process.

  • Ability to use a personal computer required, including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet, email and database applications.

  • Ability to respond to changing business requirements and priorities.

  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS)

  • Must be able to work a rotating 12-hour schedule, which includes nights, weekends, holidays and vacation coverage for peers

  • Operates as an effective member of a laboratory team.

PAY & BENEFITS
Starting hourly pay for this position is between $41.41 - $55.73 and is typically based on relevant prior work experience, qualifications, and union contract wage rates.
