What does a refinery advanced process control engineer do?

A Refinery Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining advanced control systems in oil refineries. These systems use complex algorithms and real-time data to optimize refinery processes, improving efficiency, safety, and product quality. APC Engineers work closely with operations and process engineering teams to troubleshoot control issues, analyze plant data, and ensure that control strategies align with production goals. Their work helps refineries reduce costs, minimize emissions, and operate more reliably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a refinery advanced process control engineer?

To thrive as a Refinery Advanced Process Control Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical engineering, process control theory, and experience with refining processes, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and advanced process control (APC) software such as AspenTech or Honeywell is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for optimizing processes and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These competencies are vital for maximizing refinery efficiency, ensuring safety, and driving continuous improvement in complex industrial environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by refinery advanced process control engineers in optimizing plant performance?

Refinery Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating control systems with legacy infrastructure, managing process variability, and balancing multiple objectives like throughput, energy efficiency, and product quality. They must troubleshoot and fine-tune complex models, adapt to frequent changes in feedstock, and ensure their solutions are robust and scalable. Collaboration with operations, maintenance, and IT teams is essential to successfully implement and sustain APC strategies, making strong communication and problem-solving skills important for overcoming these challenges.

Job description

Phillips 66 & You - Together we can fuel the future

As an Engineer, Process Control at Phillips 66, you will help configure, optimize, and maintain the control systems that keep our operations safe, reliable, and efficient. You will apply your engineering skills to improve how we monitor and control complex refining processes, partnering with operations, maintenance, and project teams to deliver measurable performance. In this role, you will build hands-on experience with advanced process control and digital tools while contributing directly to the success of our refinery.

What You'll Do

  • Configure, maintain, and optimize refinery process control systems, including distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and operator graphics, to meet safety, reliability, production, and optimization objectives.
  • Provide process control engineering support in assigned production areas to troubleshoot, analyze, and help safely resolve control and instrumentation issues during normal operations, startups, shutdowns, and upsets.
  • Support the design, testing, implementation, maintenance, and upgrade of process control hardware and software, including system changes for modernization, automation, and capital or turnaround projects.
  • Analyze process and control data to identify reliability, performance, and operability issues, recommend improvements, and implement straightforward changes to equipment, control logic, and work processes.
  • Monitor alarm system performance, support alarm management and rationalization activities, and help address nuisance, bad-actor, and standing alarms so operators can respond effectively to changing conditions.
  • Develop, maintain, and update documentation for control strategies, alarms, calculations, interfaces, standards, and procedures, including control narratives and related records in systems such as SAP.
  • Participate in process safety and Management of Change (MOC) activities, including process hazard analyses (PHAs), incident investigations, audits, and inspections, providing control system input and implementing assigned actions.
  • Use engineering tools, models, and analytics to test, validate, and report on control system performance against defined metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs), and share findings with cross-functional teams.

What You'll Bring - Required

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1 or more years of relevant working experience as a process, automation, or controls engineer or a similar engineering role in the refining, manufacturing, petrochemical, oil and gas or related industry
  • Possess a valid Driver's License
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Travel up to 5% of the time
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Occasional on-call duties
    • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
    • Enter confined spaces during turnarounds and equipment outages
    • Transport articles up to 50 pounds
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • Wear fire-retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, and ear and eye protection)
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred

  • 3 or more years of combined experience in process engineering/design, process control, automation, and/or related controls engineering work in refining, petrochemical, manufacturing, or a related industry
  • Experience as a process or controls engineer supporting the use, design, installation, configuration, and commissioning of control systems in a refinery or chemical manufacturing environment
  • Experience with one or more refinery processes such as crude/vacuum distillation, reforming, hydrotreating, alkylation, fluid catalytic cracking, hydrocracking, or sulfur recovery
  • Knowledge and experience with process control techniques, including regulatory control, loop tuning, control logic development, alarm management, and advanced process control design
  • Experience with the Honeywell Experion distributed control system (DCS), SCADA interfaces to third-party PLCs and other devices, and Honeywell alarm management tools such as Dynamo
  • Experience leading or contributing to small and medium process control projects from design through startup, coordinating with cross-functional teams and vendors
  • Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, with a strong commitment to safe work practices and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
