Job description

Scale AI is seeking Area Managers within the Red Team & Safety Center to lead and manage the contributor workforce conducting adversarial safety testing of frontier AI models. Area Managers are responsible for people management, workforce allocation, and operational leadership across multiple campaigns and Campaign Lead teams.

DESCRIPTION

You will manage a portfolio of ~30–45 contributors, including 2–4 Campaign Leads who report directly to you. You will own workforce allocation decisions, conduct performance reviews, take HR actions, and serve as the primary interface between the contributor workforce and Scale leadership, HR, IT, and EOR partners.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage 2–4 Campaign Leads and oversee a total contributor population of ~30–45
  • Own workforce allocation: Receive project staffing requests from delivery, assign contributors based on skill, availability, and project needs
  • Conduct weekly 1:1 performance feedback sessions with Campaign Leads and contributors; draft performance documentation with input from CLs
  • Take HR actions including “seek to understand” conversations, performance improvement plans, and escalations to HR
  • Manage all EOR administrative coordination: Timecards, PTO, benefits questions, and teaming partner liaison with HireArt
  • Coordinate with support staff (HR, IT, facilities) on contributor onboarding, offboarding, and operational needs
  • Provide subject matter oversight across campaigns: Domain guidance, content policy consultation, and quality calibration
  • Identify and develop tools, processes, and product features to improve operational efficiency and contributor success
  • Conduct training sessions for new contributors; manage knowledge transfer and onboarding processes
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2+ years of professional experience in AI red teaming, trust and safety, content safety operations, or a closely related field
  • 1+ years of direct people management or team leadership experience
  • Strong organizational and workforce planning skills; ability to manage allocations across multiple concurrent projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to deliver clear performance feedback and represent team needs to leadership
  • Experience with HR processes including performance management, corrective actions, and onboarding
  • Ability to work with sensitive or graphic material across text, image, video, audio, and agentic modalities
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience managing managed workforce operations in technology, BPO, content moderation, or government services
  • Familiarity with EOR/staffing agency coordination and co-employment considerations
  • Background in AI/ML safety evaluation, adversarial testing, or model policy development
  • Experience with productivity analytics, workforce planning tools, or operational dashboards
COMMITMENT AND LOCATION

This role may involve exposure to sensitive or distressing content across text, image, video, audio, and agentic modalities, including material that is sexual, violent, or otherwise disturbing.

Compensation packages at Scale for eligible roles include base salary, equity, and benefits. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position and may be inclusive of several career levels at Scale; it will be determined during the interview process based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, interview performance, and relevant education or training. Scale employees in eligible roles are also granted equity based compensation, subject to Board of Director approval.

  • You'll also receive benefits including, but not limited to: comprehensive health, dental and vision coverage, retirement benefits, a learning and development stipend, and generous PTO.
  • Additionally, this role may be eligible for additional benefits such as a commuter stipend.
