What is a Red Seal Welder?

A Red Seal Welder is a tradesperson who has successfully completed the requirements of the Red Seal Program in welding, which is a nationally recognized certification in Canada. The Red Seal endorsement signifies that the welder meets industry standards and is qualified to work anywhere in the country. To become a Red Seal Welder, individuals typically complete an apprenticeship, gain work experience, and pass the Red Seal examination. This certification enhances job mobility and demonstrates high competency in the welding trade.

What types of projects and industries does a Red Seal Welder typically work on, and how does this variety impact daily responsibilities?

Red Seal Welders have the opportunity to work across a wide range of industries, including construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and oil and gas. This diversity means daily responsibilities can vary greatly—ranging from fabricating structural steel for buildings to repairing heavy equipment or working on pipeline installation. The variety keeps the job interesting but also requires adaptability and a willingness to learn new welding techniques or safety protocols as projects change. Collaboration with engineers, fabricators, and other trades is common, making teamwork and communication essential parts of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Red Seal Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Red Seal Welder, you need advanced welding skills, strong blueprint reading abilities, and completion of a recognized apprenticeship along with the Red Seal certification. Familiarity with various welding processes (such as SMAW, GTAW, and FCAW), safety protocols, and welding equipment is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure high-quality, safe, and code-compliant welds on complex projects in demanding industrial environments.

What is the difference between Red Seal Welder vs Certified Pipe Welder?

CriteriaRed Seal WelderCertified Pipe Welder
CredentialsRed Seal Certification, provincial/territorial licenseOften holds a Pipe Welding Certification, may also have Red Seal
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, manufacturing, repair shopsPipeline construction, oil & gas, industrial piping

The main difference is that a Red Seal Welder is a general certification recognized across Canada for various welding types, while a Certified Pipe Welder specializes in pipe welding, often requiring additional certifications. Both roles are essential in construction and industrial sectors, but Certified Pipe Welders focus specifically on piping systems, making them highly sought after for pipeline projects.

How much do registered welders with a Red Seal make in the US?

A Red Seal welder, recognized for certification and high skill level, typically earns between $20 and $35 per hour in the US, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $40,000 to $70,000. Wages vary based on experience, location, and the complexity of the welding tasks performed.

Job description

Elite Fabrication Welder

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Company: Railcraft USA
Job Type: Full-Time

About Railcraft

Railcraft is a leading manufacturer of custom aluminum railing systems with over 40 years of industry experience. We specialize in high-end architectural railings, custom fabrication, balconies, canopies, and specialty aluminum products throughout North America. Our Phoenix facility is growing rapidly, and we are looking for exceptional talent to join our team.

Position Overview

Railcraft is seeking an Elite Fabrication Welder with a minimum of 5 years of fabrication welding experience. This is not an entry-level production welding position. We are looking for a highly skilled craftsman who takes pride in precision, quality, and efficiency.

The ideal candidate will have experience fabricating custom aluminum products from drawings, maintaining tight tolerances, and producing architecturally finished work that meets the highest standards.

Red Seal Certification or equivalent trade qualification is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate custom aluminum railing systems, canopies, decks, and architectural components
  • Perform high-quality MIG and TIG welding on aluminum materials
  • Read and interpret fabrication drawings and shop drawings
  • Layout, fit, tack, and assemble components accurately
  • Maintain strict quality standards and dimensional tolerances
  • Operate fabrication equipment including saws, drills, grinders, and welding equipment
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with company standards
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior welders when required

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 5 years of fabrication welding experience
  • Extensive experience welding aluminum
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings
  • Strong fitting and layout skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to consistently produce clean, high-quality finished products
  • Reliable attendance and strong work ethic

Preferred

  • Red Seal Welder Certification
  • Journeyman Welder Certification
  • Custom fabrication experience
  • Architectural metals experience
  • TIG welding proficiency

What We're Looking For

We are not looking for someone who simply welds parts together.

We are looking for a professional who:

  • Takes ownership of their work
  • Has pride in craftsmanship
  • Solves problems independently
  • Produces work they would be proud to put their name on
  • Wants to be part of building one of the premier aluminum fabrication companies in North America

Compensation

Compensation will be based on experience and skill level.

Top-tier candidates with proven fabrication and aluminum welding experience will be compensated accordingly.
