Job description

POSITION TITLE: Program Supervisor – Aquatics (Full-Time)

DIVISION: Recreation & Facilities

REPORTS TO: Recreation Services Manager

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt, Part-time, Starting at $21.00 per hour

Purpose of Position:

The purpose of this full-time position is to develop, plan, implement and evaluate exemplary aquatics programs, focusing on swim lessons to meet the recreational needs of the Carmel community. Responsibilities include leadership of part-time staff, managing and developing swim lesson programs, and overseeing the Sea Dragons Swim Team at the Monon Community Center, which includes an indoor and outdoor aquatics complex.  Responsibilities also include assisting the aquatics department in management of aquatic facilities as needed.

Essential Job Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Plans, coordinates, and evaluates exemplary and innovative fee-based aquatics programming such as swim lessons, American Red Cross programming, and Sea Dragons swim team.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule and evaluate part-time and seasonal programming staff for swim lessons, American Red Cross programming, and Sea Dragons swim team.
  • Coordinate swim meets with other community swim teams including, hosting, attending and communicating results. Local travel required.
  • Plans, schedules, supervises, and instructs American Red Cross programming such as Lifeguarding certification class and CPR/AED/First Aid.
  • Organize Monon Mixers, 21+ programs, including planning, staffing, sourcing vendors, obtaining permits, and program operations.
  • Establishes partnerships with community organizations to foster aquatics education.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and all members of the general public.
  • Provide and promote a well-balanced offering of programs for the community.
  • Administers programs within adopted budget guidelines while following budgeting and purchasing procedures.
  • Provides excellent customer service responding to public inquiries, suggestions and complaints in a timely manner.  Informs management as necessary.
  • Prepares and evaluates accurate and timely programming data.
  • Responsible for preparation and dissemination of promotional materials, including seasonal program guides, flyers and posters in coordination with Marketing.
  • Communicates information about programs, special events, facility memberships, and admission rates to the public in a polite and friendly manner.
  • Completes projects and deadlines as assigned by supervisor.
  • Enforces applicable rules and regulations with program participants and facility users to ensure a safe and clean environment.
  • Reliable attendance and timeliness to scheduled shifts, trainings, and meetings.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The following list are necessary for the successful performance of this position.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques utilized in planning, organizing, and implementing aquatics programs, events, and activities.
  • Knowledge of American Red Cross Swim Lesson and Life Saving Programming standards.
  • Knowledge of competitive swimming fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques; ability to organize and supervise part-time and seasonal employees.
  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in recreation activities.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently without routine supervision.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer utilizing word processing, database management, desktop publishing and other software applications as may be necessary to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to work while standing or walking for long periods of time. 
  • Ability to positively adhere to and enforce Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation policy and procedures; implement emergency plans.
  • Ability to give and understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments that may include extreme heat, humidity, and cold.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle to conduct work activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, education or related field preferred.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Certification preferred.
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Certification within 30 days of hire.
  • LGI Certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana driver's license within 60 days of hire.

Must Complete Prior to Starting with Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation:

  • Must pass a background check that encompasses national, state and local searches.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test.
