Position Title
Recycling Technician
Position Summary
The Recycling Technician position reports directly to the Grounds Supervisor. Primary responsibilities include waste (e.g. trash, solid waste, compost, etc.) recycling and removal. The Recycling Technician will also be responsible for the tasks described in detail below.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide support in the existing program for recycling of solid waste campus wide to reduce the college's carbon footprint.
  • Maintain both interior and exterior recycling stations in a clean and presentable fashion at all times through routine/scheduled service.
  • Pick up and disposal of cardboard from trash holding areas throughout campus.
  • Coordinate with event set-up team and event coordinators to ensure recycling receptacles are at all campus events with the goal of "zero waste".
  • Deliver excellent customer service by conducting regular inspections and routine observations to ensure overall productivity and quality control of recycling operations. Notify the Grounds Supervisor of any operational changes needed.
  • Assist with student volunteer events, and the implementation of sustainability initiatives.

Required Qualifications
Must have a High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of two years of related experience, preferably in a facilities management or college campus environment. Must possess an interest in recycling and sustainability.
Ability to multi-task, prioritize with excellent problem-resolving skills with the goal of providing excellent customer service and contributing to the mission of Spelman College and the FMS and Grounds Teams.
Must possess excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to interact in a diverse community and able to adapt to changing situations.
Good oral and written communication skills required, with the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence and to speak effectively when interacting with the public and the entire Spelman community is required.
Incumbent must be able to utilize e-mail systems such as Lotus Notes or Outlook.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Basic computer software skills using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel) are preferred

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: walk, stand, use hands to handle office supplies and gardening tools and operate computer, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to: reach with hands and arms, and stoop for prolonged periods of time, climb or crawl, and smell. The employee is occasionally required to: lift and/or move up to 40 pounds unassisted. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to toxic chemicals and fumes, mechanical moving parts, wet or humid conditions, and extreme weather related heat and outside weather conditions. The employee may occasionally work in high and precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
