Description and Functions Open Until Filled GENERAL DESCRIPTION: As a Recreational Activities Coordinator in a correctional environment, the primary role is to develop, implement, and oversee structured physical, athletic, and leisure programs for the inmate population. These programs are essential for facility security, stress reduction, and behavioral management. This position is located at the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution (WMCI) in Torrington, Wyoming.

Develops and administers the therapeutic facility's recreational program, utilizing various forms of recreation. Works with uniformed, non-uniformed, and contracted staff members for personalized recreational programs
Maintain workout equipment, train employees to troubleshoot, recognize problems, and how to correct minor problems. Projects budgetary needs and maintains routine inventories. Supervises staff, assists in the hiring of recreational activities specialists, makes recommendations for disciplinary actions, including termination, and evaluates assigned staff.
Assists with the development and administration of the recreational program for the facility, utilizing various forms of recreation to meet the physical, cognitive, and sensory needs of the individuals. Creates a schedule that includes daily, weekly, monthly, and annual recreation/leisure activities for large groups of inmates. Monitors participants during recreational activities to ensure institutional and individual safety.
Completes regular inventories of supplies and equipment and prepares requests for new or replacement equipment and supplies. Prepares schedules for inmate recreational activities and special projects. Coordinates and facilitates inmate incentive programs, such as food sales, bake sales, fundraisers, etc.
The work schedule may include weekends and evening hours. Responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable workplace, including participation in initiatives designed to promote a positive work environment Qualifications PREFERENCES: Preference may be given to those with 3 or more years of work experience in a Recreational and/or correctional environment. Preference may be given to those with 2 or more years of supervisor experience in a Recreational and/or correctional environment.
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of supervisory techniques: guide, monitor, and support their team to achieve organizational goals Knowledge of recreational therapy practice, principles, and procedures. Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to the area of specialization. Knowledge of recreational materials, tools, and equipment, and their care and use.
Knowledge of the rules and procedures for a wide variety of team and individual sports and games. Knowledge of individual and group work techniques used in recreational instruction and organization. Knowledge of community resources available to the recreation program of the institution.
Knowledge of emergencies and dangerous situations and how to physically respond to them. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor's Degree (typically in Recreation Therapy) Experience: 0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in recreational therapy) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Recreational Activities Specialist OR Education & Experience Substitution: 4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in recreational therapy) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Recreational Activities Specialist Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None Necessary Special Requirements PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical ability to lift, twist, bend, pull, and push up to 50 lbs. Climbing on an occasional to regular basis Walking on cement floors on an occasional to regular basis Stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching on an occasional basis Reaching on a regular basis Standing on a regular basis Pushing/pulling on a regular basis Typing/Repetitive motion on a regular basis Talking/hearing on a frequent basis Seeing: the visual ability to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
Seeing: the visual ability to perform an activity such as analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading. Pre-service and annual training is required, which includes Krav Maga defensive tactics. A background check, including the taking of fingerprints, will be completed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Family Services, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for every successful applicant.
NOTES: FLSA: Non-Exempt Successful applicants for employment must pass a background/reference check and drug test prior to appointment. The Wyoming Department of Corrections is a Drug-Free Workplace. Per WDOC policy, all staff are subject to drug testing while employed by the WDOC.
