Job description

Job Summary:
The Recreation Therapist is under the direct supervision of the Director of Geriatric Psychiatric Services. A COTA (Certified OT Assistant) will also be under the supervision of an OTR (Registered Occupational Therapist) in the hospital setting. This position is responsible for daily operation of their assigned areas and focuses on recreational and leisure activity for the patients on the Transitions Unit. This individual demonstrates core competencies within the disciplines of Recreational Therapy or Occupational Therapy. This position integrates daily patient care within the Witham Health Services philosophy in all aspects of the job performance and interpersonal relationships.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Recreational Therapy or Bachelor of Art, Recreation Management, or an Associates degree in Occupational Therapy from a O.T. Assistant Program.
  • Must demonstrate successful completion of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist program (CTRS) recognized by the State of Indiana and pass the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification test to become certified as a Recreational Therapist.
  • The Occupational Therapist must have graduated from an accredited school with Associate's Degree and have comparable abilities as a Recreation Therapist. Current certification or certification eligible by the National Board of Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • Current certification and in good standing by the State of Indiana or temporary certification for new graduates.
  • They will work under the supervision of a hospital OTR and will design patient care plans appropriate for the Geri Psych patient in the hospital setting.
  • Any discipline considered for this position must posses the knowledge of care and treatment of mental illness in the geriatric population and those suffering cognitive deficits.
  • At least one year of experience is preferred. Must be CPR certified.
