Job description

Description
The Custodian Lead is a full-time, non-exempt position within the Village of Pleasant Prairie RecPlex Facilities Department and reports directly to the Facilities Coordinator. This position is responsible for leading and supporting the daily custodial and facility operations of the RecPlex, including responding to service requests, overseeing custodial staff, maintaining facility cleanliness and safety standards, coordinating event and rental set-ups, and assisting with various maintenance activities to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patrons and staff.
Schedule: Saturday through Wednesday, 4:00 p.m. - 12:30 a.m.
Job Duties
  • Functions as point contact for Facilities Department service calls. Responds to facilities service requests on radios, delegating or performing work as required. Contacts on-call maintenance staff or managers in the event of maintenance emergencies.
  • Provides guidance and oversight of custodial staff while ensuring proper care and accounting for all equipment and materials in your area of responsibility.
  • Opens or closes the facility; performs physical inspection of the entire building to ensure safety of employees and patrons in the facility and the facility cleanliness standards are implemented.
  • Performs various custodial and cleaning duties including; but not limited to, picking up towels, sweeping and mopping floors, and sanitizing counters and surfaces, while proactively addressing facility needs without requiring direct supervision or instruction.
  • Assists with the setup, breakdown, and operational support of indoor and outdoor special events, activities, and rentals, ensuring event areas are properly prepared and all equipment used is properly maintained.
  • Coordinates work with recreation staff for scheduling and reservations of program facilities.
  • Recommends and submits requisitions for new equipment and necessary repairs, while providing feedback to Facilities Department supervision regarding additional support, training, and guidance needed to enhance team effectiveness and professional development.
  • Utilizes knowledge of RecPlex departments (managers and front-line staff) and their functions and responsibilities to encourage collaboration.
  • Attends required staff meetings, training and seminars; maintains required certifications.
  • Responds in a friendly and professional manner when working with co-workers, patron inquiries, or complaints; consistently strives to follow through or exceed the expectations of RecPlex members.
  • As needed, operates Zamboni Ice Resurfacer for special events or staffing shortages.
  • Adheres to and communicates established facility operating procedures while utilizing AkitaBox to document, track, and complete assigned tasks and work orders.
  • Leads by example and enforces all Village & Department policies and procedures, and Village codes and ordinances.
  • Performs other duties and special assignments as directed within the scope of the RecPlex and/or Facilities Department.

Requirements
Physical
  • Requires frequent public interaction and the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these areas.
  • Work is conducted primarily in an indoor fitness/recreation environment with possible exposure to high and low temperatures and humidity, slippery surfaces, moving mechanical parts, high / precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, pool chemicals, or risk of electrical shock.
  • May occasionally require the ability to perform physical labor outdoors in various weather conditions (rain, cold, snow, heat, wind).
  • Requires frequent movement about the RecPlex building and office spaces.
  • Frequently required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to access low spaces or detail floors. Frequently extends hands and arms in any direction to clean high surfaces, windows, or fixtures. Occasionally ascend/descend ladders or stairs to clean, change light bulbs, or perform overhead maintenance.

Educational, Certifications and Experience
  • 2+ years of experience in facility, ice arena and/or pool; supervisory experience preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Obtainment of First-Aid, CPR/AED Certification within three (3) months of hire.
  • Successfully completes internal training and obtains authorization to independently operate the Zamboni Ice Resurfacer within three (3) months of hire.
  • Obtainment of Aquatic Facility Operators License within one (1) year of hire.
  • Strong knowledge of facility maintenance and custodial practices, safety regulations, and industry standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, organize work, and manage work schedules and deadlines effectively.
  • Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills for working with a diverse population including other employees, public officials, and the general public.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, or work experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
