What is a records retention manager?

Records Retention Managers are professionals responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing policies and procedures related to the retention, storage, and disposal of organizational records. They ensure that an organization complies with legal, regulatory, and operational requirements for managing records throughout their lifecycle. Their duties often include creating retention schedules, training staff, conducting audits, and ensuring that confidential information is securely destroyed when no longer needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a records retention manager?

To thrive as a Records Retention Manager, you need expertise in records management principles, legal compliance, and information governance, usually supported by a degree in information science or a related field. Familiarity with electronic records management systems (ERMS), document management software, and relevant certifications such as CRM (Certified Records Manager) are typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly help ensure effective policy implementation and staff training. • Support planning and delivery discipline across the team, including backlog health, sprint readiness, dependency management, and follow-through on committed work.
  • Partner closely with Compliance, Risk, Legal, and Enterprise Technology stakeholders to support electronic communications surveillance capabilities, records retention requirements, and evolving communication technologies.
  • Surface risks, blockers, and tradeoffs early with clear context, options, and recommended next steps for leadership and partner alignment.
  • Drive operational excellence across the team's portfolio, ensuring reliable service delivery, strong controls, and alignment with enterprise compliance objectives.
What You'll Bring to the Role

  • 1-2 years of technical leadership experience, with or without direct reports.
  • Proven track record of successfully designing and delivering significant and impactful technology solutions within complex enterprise environments.
  • Experience developing and leading solution delivery using Agile methods.
  • Experience supporting business-critical applications, operational platforms, or compliance-related technology solutions.
  • Experience working with third-party vendors and vendor-supported technology platforms.
  • Experience supporting electronic communications monitoring, surveillance, regulatory compliance, records retention, cybersecurity, governance, risk management, or related compliance technology platforms is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with compliance technology, risk management, or other highly regulated business environments is preferred.
  • Capable of communicating effectively between product, engineering, compliance, and business stakeholders.
  • Ability to successfully communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences in varying forms and levels of detail.
  • Leads teams to collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
