JOB DESCRIPTION
The Studio Monitor should be dependable, attentive to detail, and comfortable working independently. Candidates with a background or experience in the relevant art area may also be asked to provide basic assistance and support to students during designated after-hours studio access.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain cleanliness and organization of art studios, work areas, and shared spaces.
Ensure tools, equipment, supplies, and work surfaces are properly organized and returned to their designated locations.
Monitor the condition of studio spaces and report maintenance, safety, or equipment concerns to the appropriate department personnel
Help maintain a safe and functional working environment by following departmental safety procedures.
Assist with routine studio upkeep, including cleaning work surfaces, floors, sinks, storage areas, and other shared spaces.
Help prepare studios for classes, workshops, critiques, and other department activities as needed.
Monitor studio use and help ensure that students follow established studio policies and procedures.
Provide a welcoming and professional presence in the studio.
When qualified through prior education or experience, provide basic guidance and assistance to students working in the studio after regular class hours.
Help students with appropriate use of studio equipment, materials, and processes within the scope of the employee's knowledge and training.
Know when to refer technical, safety, or instructional questions to faculty or appropriate department staff.
Perform other studio-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience, coursework, or demonstrated interest in the relevant art discipline preferred.
Previous experience working in an art studio, educational environment, makerspace, or similar setting is a plus.
Strong organizational and cleaning skills.
Dependable, responsible, and able to work independently.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to interact positively and professionally with students, faculty, and staff.
Ability to follow safety procedures and departmental policies.
For after-hours student support, demonstrated knowledge and experience with the relevant studio practices, equipment, materials, or techniques is preferred.
Additional Expectations
The Studio Monitor is expected to take ownership of the condition and organization of the studio and to proactively address routine maintenance and organizational needs. When providing after-hours student assistance, the Studio Monitor is not expected to replace faculty instruction but should be able to provide appropriate guidance within their area of experience and recognize when a question or issue requires faculty or staff assistance
