What is receptionist training?

Receptionist training is a program or set of courses designed to teach individuals the skills and knowledge needed to work effectively as a receptionist. Training often includes instruction in customer service, phone etiquette, computer and office software proficiency, organization, and basic administrative tasks. It may also cover handling confidential information, scheduling appointments, and managing front desk operations. Such training can be provided on-the-job, through workshops, or via online courses, and helps ensure receptionists are well-prepared to represent their organization professionally.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a receptionist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Receptionist, you need excellent organizational abilities, strong verbal and written communication skills, and basic office management knowledge, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with office software like Microsoft Office, phone systems, and scheduling tools is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, professionalism, and a customer-focused attitude set top receptionists apart. These competencies ensure smooth front desk operations, positive first impressions, and efficient communication within an organization.

What are some common challenges faced during receptionist training, and how can they be overcome?

During receptionist training, new hires often encounter challenges such as mastering multi-line phone systems, learning to prioritize tasks during busy periods, and becoming familiar with company protocols for visitor management. Overcoming these challenges typically involves hands-on practice, shadowing experienced staff, and utilizing checklists or digital tools to stay organized. Regular feedback and open communication with supervisors help trainees build confidence and quickly adapt to the fast-paced environment that reception roles often demand.

What is the difference between Receptionist Training vs Office Assistant Training?

AspectReceptionist TrainingOffice Assistant Training
CredentialsCustomer service, communication skills, basic computer skillsAdministrative skills, basic computer skills, organizational skills
Work EnvironmentFront desk, customer interaction, reception areaOffice setting, administrative support, varied tasks
Industry UsageHotels, healthcare, corporate receptionCorporate offices, legal, finance, general administrative roles

Receptionist Training focuses on customer service, communication, and front desk skills for roles involving direct interaction with visitors and clients. Office Assistant Training emphasizes broader administrative skills for supporting office operations. While both roles require basic computer skills, receptionists often need specialized customer service training, making the two distinct but related career paths.

Job description

Join a locally owned Great Clips® salon team and help deliver a welcoming, comfortable salon experience. As a receptionist, you'll be the first point of contact for customers and a key support for stylists and salon management throughout the day.
If you enjoy helping people, staying organized, and working as part of a team in an energetic, supportive salon environment, this could be a great fit.
Receptionist / Future Stylist Trainee
*Greet guests, answer phones, and support daily salon operations.
*Help maintain salon cleanliness, sanitation, and a welcoming environment.
*Train on mannequins and learn alongside experienced stylists while completing cosmetology or barbering school.
*Prepare for a future stylist position after graduation and licensure.
Requirements:
*Currently enrolled in cosmetology or barbering school.
*Positive attitude, strong customer service skills, and a passion for the beauty industry.
Why you'll love it here
Great Clips salons give receptionists (aka salon coordinators) the structure and support to succeed in a customer-focused role:
  • Great, reliable hourly wage
  • Flexible scheduling with dependable retail hours
  • A team environment where salon staff help each other succeed
  • The opportunity to create positive connections with customers and teammates while supporting essential salon operations
  • Clear processes and training for front-desk responsibilities
  • Experience working in a professional salon setting
  • Opportunities to grow into other roles within the salon, if desired
  • Innovative salon technology, including Online Check-In and the Great Clips App

Employee offerings like medical benefits and paid time off (PTO) may be available at certain locations.
What you bring to the team
To join a Great Clips salon team as a receptionist, you'll need:
  • A friendly, professional approach to customer service
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to stay organized and manage multiple tasks
  • Reliability and a positive attitude
  • Comfort using basic technology and learning new systems
  • A team-first mindset and willingness to support salon operations

No cosmetology or barber license is required for the receptionist position. However, it can be a great opportunity for individuals exploring a future career in the industry to gain salon experience while working toward licensure. Current cosmetology and barber students are encouraged to apply.
Who we are
As the world's largest salon brand, with over 4,400 locally owned and operated salons across the U.S. and Canada, Great Clips combines strong brand recognition, marketing, and support with a close-knit, team-oriented culture. We're passionate about cutting hair and providing great value for the whole family. Talented teams of skilled professionals, along with convenient hours and a great haircut experience, set us apart in our communities.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
