What is a receiving assistant?

Receiving Assistants are responsible for accepting, inspecting, and processing incoming shipments in warehouses, retail stores, or distribution centers. They check deliveries for accuracy, report any damages or discrepancies, and ensure that goods are properly stored or routed to their correct locations. Receiving Assistants also maintain records of received items and may assist with inventory management to keep stock levels accurate. Their work helps ensure the smooth flow of goods and materials throughout an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a receiving assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Receiving Assistant, you need attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and familiarity with inventory management, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanners, and basic computer software is commonly required. Outstanding teamwork, time management, and effective communication help you excel in this fast-paced environment. These skills ensure accurate inventory control, efficient workflow, and smooth coordination with other departments.

What are some common challenges faced by receiving assistants, and how can they be addressed?

Receiving Assistants often encounter challenges such as handling high volumes of shipments during peak periods, ensuring accuracy in inventory records, and maintaining safety while unloading deliveries. These challenges can be managed by staying organized, double-checking documentation, and following proper safety protocols. Teamwork and communication with warehouse staff and supervisors are also critical for resolving discrepancies and keeping operations running smoothly.

  • Verify incoming package and pallet counts against available shipping documentation.
  • Unload, move, stage, and palletize incoming return boxes and equipment.
  • Open incoming packages and safely remove computer equipment, monitors, peripherals, cables, and accessories.
  • Identify and categorize returned assets by equipment type, condition, client, and required processing path.
  • Scan or manually enter serial numbers, asset tags, shipment information, and other required data into the ITF inventory management system.

  • Assist with inventory counts, audits, and equipment reconciliation as assigned.
  • Support outbound shipping operations during high-volume periods, including staging, labeling, loading, and package preparation.
  • Follow all safety, equipment-handling, data-security, and inventory-control procedures.
  • Meet established productivity, accuracy, quality, and attendance expectations.
  • Perform other warehouse and logistics duties as assigned.

  • Maintain dependable attendance and arrive ready to work at the scheduled start time.
  • Work productively throughout the shift while limiting unnecessary interruptions.
  • Follow the production-floor phone policy and use personal phones only during approved breaks or emergencies.
  • Specific throughput expectations may vary based on package composition, equipment type, workload, and operational demand.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Basic computer and data-entry skills.
  • Ability to read serial numbers, asset tags, shipping labels, and equipment identifiers accurately.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy while completing repetitive tasks.
