Readability information

What is readability and why is it important in writing?

Readability refers to how easy it is for someone to read and understand a piece of text. It is influenced by factors such as sentence length, word choice, and text structure. High readability ensures that information can be quickly and accurately absorbed by a wide audience, making communication more effective. In professional and educational settings, improving readability helps engage readers and reduces misunderstandings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a readability specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Readability Specialist, you need expertise in linguistics, grammar, and written communication, typically supported by a degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with readability assessment tools (such as Flesch-Kincaid or Hemingway Editor), content management systems, and accessibility guidelines is essential. Outstanding attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to convey complex ideas in a clear, audience-appropriate manner are important soft skills. These abilities ensure that content is easily understood by the intended audience, enhancing engagement and accessibility.

What are some common challenges faced by readability specialists when working with diverse audiences?

Readability specialists often encounter challenges when tailoring content to suit diverse audiences with varying literacy levels, backgrounds, and needs. Balancing clarity and accuracy while maintaining the intended tone and ensuring the material remains accessible can be complex. Collaborating with subject matter experts, designers, and translators is common to make sure content is effective for everyone. Staying updated on best practices and user feedback is essential for continuous improvement in this role.

The Republic of Tea is a progressive and socially conscious business recognized as a leading purveyor of nearly 400 all-natural premium teas, herbs and gifts. We enrich people's lives through great-tasting teas, education and innovation while championing a "Sip by Sip Rather Than Gulp by Gulp" lifestyle. In keeping with our whimsical identity as an independent Republic, we refer to our employees as Ministers, sales representatives as Ambassadors, consumers as Citizens and our retail partners as Embassies. As a family-owned company, we are dedicated to sharing our prosperity through meaningful philanthropic partnerships and creating opportunities for learning and growth within our TEAm. Join us and become part of a collaborative, purpose-driven culture-where you can grow your career, expand your network, and help lead the tea revolution.
POSITION SUMMARY:
As the Digital Commerce Content Specialist, you'll serve as the primary copywriter and content steward. You will own the development, editing, accuracy, and ongoing optimization of consumer-facing copy across both brands, translating each brand's distinct voice into clear, engaging content for ecommerce websites, email, catalogs, social media, paid media, retailer platforms, product launches, and sales materials.
In this role, you will combine exceptional writing and editing skills with disciplined content operations to manage a high volume of projects and product information. You will maintain content in Shopify and Syndigo, support search visibility and conversion, and collaborate closely with Marketing, Creative, Ecommerce, Commercialization, Regulatory, Sales, and outside agency partners to ensure every piece of content is accurate, on-brand, optimized for its channel, and delivered on time.
If you enjoy balancing creativity with organization, thrive in a collaborative environment, and love creating content that informs, inspires, and drives results, we would love to hear from you.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Copywriting and Brand Voice
  • Write, edit, and proof copy for both brands while maintaining their distinct voice, tone, terminology, and audience expectations
  • Own copy development for email and SMS, website banners and landing pages, product and collection pages, catalogs and direct mail, organic and paid social, retailer marketing, presentations, one-pagers, brochures, guides, and sales materials
  • Translate product features, flavor profiles, ingredients, preparation guidance, seasonal themes, partnerships, and brand stories into persuasive, customer-focused messaging
  • Create headlines, subject lines, preheaders, calls to action, product names, promotional copy, educational content, FAQs, and channel-specific variations
  • Provide final copy-editing and proofreading for grammar, claims, product details, offer language, links, and brand standards
  • Maintain practical brand voice and copy standards, including approved terminology, claims guidance, and channel conventions

Ecommerce and Product Content
  • Own written product content across multiple brands, including descriptions, feature callouts, flavor notes, preparation instructions, FAQs, metadata, and required compliance details
  • Maintain product detail, collection, and landing pages in Shopify as products launch, change, transition, or are discontinued
  • Coordinate the content process for new item setup, product renovations, and discontinuations to ensure approved copy is live by required dates
  • Maintain a content refresh calendar and review pages for accuracy, consistency, mobile readability, accessibility, discoverability, and conversion
  • Partner with Creative to develop content briefs, copy decks, wireframes, image copy, and direction for digital and print assets

Retailer and Syndicated Content
  • Own the accuracy and day-to-day maintenance of product copy in Syndigo across active retail and wholesale partners
  • Create and optimize retailer-specific titles, bullets, descriptions, enhanced content, search terms, FAQs, and other digital shelf content
  • Partner with the Digital Marketplace Manager to adapt approved source content for Amazon and third-party marketplaces
  • Coordinate with Commercialization and Regulatory to gather approved product information and support launch readiness
  • Audit retailer and syndicated content for accuracy, completeness, claims, search visibility, ratings and reviews, and brand consistency; help resolve publishing and content-flow issues
  • Monitor competitor content and digital shelf execution to identify improvement opportunities

Search, Editorial Planning, and Optimization
  • Conduct keyword and customer-question research and apply SEO, AEO, and GEO principles to product, category, educational, seasonal, and campaign content
  • Optimize titles, headings, body copy, metadata, internal links, tagging, taxonomy, and structured content for traditional and AI-powered discovery
  • Maintain integrated editorial calendars across both brands, coordinating topics, formats, deadlines, approvals, and publication schedules
  • Develop organic social copy and repurpose product, campaign, educational, and editorial content for relevant platforms
  • Monitor content, ecommerce, organic search, email, and social performance using GA4, Search Console, platform analytics, and SEO tools
  • Support content testing, document results and learnings, and use performance data to refine copy standards and future content plans

Project and Cross-Functional Support
  • Support seasonal campaigns, product launches, partnerships, retailer initiatives, trade shows, packaging updates, and sales enablement projects
  • Attend project meetings, document decisions, communicate next steps, and proactively flag missing information, risks, or timing concerns
  • Serve as a content accuracy and brand voice resource for Marketing, Commerce, Sales, Creative, and agency partners

Perform other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, English, Journalism, Business, or equivalent relevant experience
  • 0 - 2 years of experience in copywriting, content marketing, ecommerce content, editorial production, or a related role
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong consumer-facing writing across multiple formats and the ability to shift voice for different brands and audiences
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with a content management system, preferably Shopify or WordPress, and working knowledge of ecommerce SEO
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple assignments, stakeholders, SKUs, and deadlines
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with creative, ecommerce, sales, product, regulatory, operations, and technical partners

  • Content Accuracy and Customer Perspective: Gets product details, claims, links, and offer language right while writing for real customer needs
  • Proactive Ownership and Operational Discipline: Identifies gaps, brings structure to a high volume of requests, and follows work through completion
