React Query information

What is React Query?

React Query is a powerful data-fetching and state management library for React applications. It simplifies the process of fetching, caching, synchronizing, and updating server data in your UI, eliminating the need for complex state management solutions or manual data handling. By handling background updates, caching, and stale data, React Query helps developers build fast and responsive applications with less boilerplate code. It works seamlessly with REST, GraphQL, and other data sources, making it a versatile choice for modern web development.

What are some common challenges developers face when integrating React Query into an existing React application?

One common challenge developers encounter is adapting existing state management patterns to leverage React Query’s data-fetching and caching mechanisms effectively. Transitioning from traditional global state solutions like Redux or Context to React Query often requires rethinking how server state and client state are separated and managed. Additionally, ensuring proper cache invalidation and understanding query keys can be tricky at first, but mastering these concepts is essential for optimal application performance. Collaborating with teammates to establish best practices for query structure and error handling helps streamline the adoption process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a React Query developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a React Query Developer, you need a solid understanding of JavaScript, React, and asynchronous data fetching patterns, along with experience in frontend development. Proficiency with React Query itself, familiarity with RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and tools like Axios or Fetch are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top candidates apart in this role. Mastery of these skills ensures efficient data management, optimal user experiences, and smooth integration of complex data-driven features in modern web applications.

What is the difference between React Query vs React Developer?

AspectReact Query
Required SkillsData fetching, caching, server state management, React hooks
Work EnvironmentFrontend development, UI/UX focus, JavaScript/React projects
Industry UsageWeb applications, SaaS platforms, e-commerce sites

React Query is a library for managing server state in React applications, focusing on data fetching and caching. A React Developer builds entire user interfaces, often using React Query as a tool within their skill set. While React Developers need broader knowledge of React, JavaScript, and UI design, React Query specialists focus on efficient data management within React apps. Both roles often overlap in web development teams, but React Query is a specific library skill, whereas React Developer is a broader role.

Job description

ABOUT THIS ROLE

As a Staff Fullstack Software Engineer at LVT, you will set the technical direction for software spanning our entire UI surface area and the mission-critical backend services supporting it. Operating as an individual contributor with organizational-wide impact, you will own architecture end-to-end-from React components and Next.js server actions to GraphQL federation and real-time edge flows. This role demands deep engineering judgment, systemic problem-solving across unfamiliar codebases, and a passion for multiplying the capabilities of the senior and mid-level engineers around you.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • End-to-End Technical Direction: Act as the technical authority across the stack (UI, BFF, GraphQL APIs, and backend data systems), driving architectural decisions that span multiple teams, authoring foundational design docs, and shipping the most complex core components.

  • Cross-Service Architecture & Debugging: Trace and resolve complex, systemic issues across service boundaries-from the front-end to backend subgraphs and authorization layers-serving as the ultimate escalation point when technical layers disagree.

  • Federation & Contract Governance: Own the health, evolution, and long-term hygiene of our GraphQL federation graph and data contracts, establishing safe schema evolution and migration paths for product teams.

  • Scale, Reliability, & Observability: Raise the operational bar by defining meaningful SLOs, end-to-end tracing, and comprehensive dashboards, ensuring real-time WebSocket and device-control paths degrade gracefully and operate reliably.

  • Multiplier-Level Teamwork: Mentor and coach engineers across both frontend and backend disciplines, elevating code review standards, leading cross-functional design discussions, and partnering with cross-org stakeholders to land large-scale technical initiatives.

  • Continuous Engineering Improvement: Systematically identify and resolve global organizational bottlenecks, optimizing for total stack type-safety, CI/CD performance, legacy surface deprecations, and on-call developer ergonomics.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • Experience & Stack Mastery: 8+ years of professional development experience utilizing TypeScript across both client and server, alongside proven production experience leading non-trivial architectures in React and Next.js (App Router).

  • Backend & API Design: Deep production expertise designing and operating Node.js backend services (NestJS preferred) and a strong command of GraphQL ecosystems (Apollo Server, schema design, federation, subscriptions, and N+1/DataLoader patterns).

  • Data & Real-Time Systems: Comprehensive experience with relational databases (MySQL preferred), query builders/ORMs (such as Knex), database migrations, and a working knowledge of scaling WebSocket-based real-time data flows.

  • Security & Infrastructure: Robust understanding of modern authentication/authorization patterns (OAuth/OIDC, JWT, and ABAC/ReBAC models) alongside practical knowledge of Docker, container orchestration, and optimization of fast, trustworthy CI/CD pipelines.

  • Legacy Systems Fluency: Outstanding analytical and debugging skills with the ability to safely navigate, test, and refactor complex legacy software (older React and Webpack codebases) that may lack original documentation or test coverage.

  • Influence Without Authority: Demonstrated technical leadership, possessing the strong communication and interpersonal skills required to align engineering teams and business stakeholders around multi-quarter technical strategies.

  • Highly Advantageous (Nice to Have): Familiarity with message brokers (RabbitMQ), IoT/device protocols (MQTT), policy engines (Cedar, OPA), observability tools (OpenTelemetry, Sentry, Coralogix), Monorepos (Turbo, Bun), or physical security/video streaming platforms.
