What is rapid prototyping?

A Rapid Prototyping job involves designing, developing, and testing early-stage product models using various techniques like 3D printing, CNC machining, or digital fabrication. Professionals in this role work closely with designers and engineers to create functional prototypes quickly, allowing for iterative improvements before mass production. They must have skills in CAD software, material selection, and manufacturing processes. The goal is to accelerate product development by identifying design flaws and optimizing performance early in the process.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in rapid prototyping?

A typical day in Rapid Prototyping involves collaborating closely with engineers and designers to translate concepts into physical models using tools like 3D printers, CNC machines, and various design software. You might spend part of your day refining CAD drawings, selecting appropriate materials, troubleshooting prototype issues, and running tests to evaluate functionality. The work environment is usually hands-on and fast-paced, requiring quick adaptation to shifting project priorities. Teamwork and frequent communication are essential as you work alongside cross-functional teams to meet tight development timelines. This role offers exposure to cutting-edge technology and provides opportunities for skill development in both design and fabrication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in rapid prototyping?

To thrive in Rapid Prototyping, you need expertise in design thinking, CAD modeling, materials science, and hands-on fabrication, often supported by a degree in engineering, industrial design, or a related field. Familiarity with rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, and software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, adaptability, and effective communication make you stand out in this position. These skills are crucial for efficiently transforming concepts into tangible prototypes, allowing teams to quickly iterate and innovate in fast-paced environments.

Job description

MTSI is seeking a Senior Prototyping and Implementation Architect to support the NGAD Family of Systems (FoS) enterprise. This role focuses on accelerating technical maturation and prototyping activities across advanced air dominance platforms, mission systems, weapons, digital engineering ecosystems, and operational architectures. You will lead government and industry teams through rapid design iteration, integration planning, and early system validation to ensure NGAD FoS solutions meet mission needs in highly contested environments.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead technical prototyping strategies that align with NGAD portfolio goals, including platform, sensor, weapon, connectivity, and autonomy components.
• Translate high-level operational requirements into executable prototyping roadmaps, digital engineering models, and early integration plans.
• Partner with government program offices to evaluate technology readiness, identify technical risks, and shape early engineering trades.
• Guide industry partners through architecture development, interface definition, modeling activities, and risk-reduction prototype builds.
• Develop implementation frameworks for transitioning prototype capabilities into formal programs of record or spiral development efforts.
• Coordinate across mission threads, CONOPS development, and capability decomposition to ensure prototypes reflect end-to-end operational needs.
• Provide senior-level engineering leadership during technical interchange meetings, design reviews, and early integration exercises.
• Support government stakeholders in planning and executing experimentation campaigns, flight tests, lab-based evaluations, and digital simulations.
• Interface with digital engineering, modeling and simulation, systems engineering, software development, and test communities.
• Produce decision-quality documentation, analysis summaries, prototype assessments, and architecture recommendations for senior acquisition leaders.
Required Qualifications:
• 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, architecture development, prototyping, RDT&E, or advanced aerospace design.
• Proven experience supporting major defense aviation acquisition programs (preferred: fighter, UCAV, autonomy, sensors, mission systems, or weapons).
• Strong understanding of digital engineering tools, model-based systems engineering, and family-of-systems architecture development.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary technical teams and provide strategic engineering guidance to senior leaders.
• Excellent communication skills and experience supporting rapid development cycles.
• Active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility; willingness to obtain SAP/SAF access.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience within NGAD, Collaborative Combat Aircraft, Advanced Weapons, Digital Engineering Ecosystem, or similar advanced DoD programs.
• Background in rapid prototyping environments, flight test, mission systems integration, or autonomy architectures.
• Experience supporting government program management, acquisition strategy development, and multi-vendor coordination.
