How much do range rider jobs pay per hour?

As of May 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for range rider in California is $17.84, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $11.39 and $22.07 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a Range Rider job?

A Range Rider is responsible for monitoring and managing livestock on open rangelands, ensuring they remain within designated grazing areas while protecting them from predators and environmental hazards. They often work on horseback or ATVs, checking fences, water sources, and forage conditions. Range Riders may also assist with herding, branding, and medical care of livestock, depending on the employer's needs. Their role is crucial in maintaining sustainable grazing practices and ensuring livestock health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Range Rider position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Range Rider, you need strong livestock management abilities, wilderness navigation skills, and knowledge of rangeland ecology, often supported by experience with ranching or natural resource management. Familiarity with GPS devices, mapping tools, radio communications, and sometimes certification in animal handling or first aid are commonly required. Outstanding observation, resilience, problem-solving, and effective communication enable a Range Rider to work independently and coordinate with landowners, agencies, and team members. These skills are vital for ensuring livestock health, protecting natural resources, and maintaining collaborative relationships across vast and remote grazing areas.

What does a typical day look like for a Range Rider, and how much time is spent outdoors?

A typical day for a Range Rider involves patrolling rangelands on horseback, ATV, or by foot to monitor livestock, check fencing and water supplies, and assess for potential hazards such as predators or invasive species. Most of the work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and across rugged terrain. Range Riders often work independently but also communicate regularly with ranch owners, land managers, and sometimes wildlife biologists to report observations and coordinate plans. Flexibility in working hours is common, especially during critical periods like calving season or when addressing urgent issues. This role is ideal for those who enjoy hands-on work in natural settings and can adapt to the unpredictability of outdoor environments.

Job description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

Our team combines a leading on-demand mobility and delivery platform with deep expertise in marketplace management and local operations to help Autonomous Vehicle (AV) partners deploy and scale their technology globally. We operate at the highest level of strategic integration, bridging the gap between cutting-edge self-driving stacks and a massive, global consumer network.

As the Senior Staff Product Manager for Autonomous Vehicle Platform & Experience, you will define the future of what a Rivian becomes when the "driver" becomes a "passenger." You will be responsible for ensuring seamless integration that bridges the gap between Rivian’s world-class vehicle platform and autonomous ride-hailing networks.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic Roadmap: Define and evangelize the long-term vision for a best-in-class AV rider experience, setting the industry standard for autonomous mobility. Benchmark competing experiences in the US and EU. Make these findings actionable for the design and product teams.
  • Partner Leadership: Lead deep technical and product collaborations with external rideshare operators to co-design the future of the rider-to-vehicle interface. Work with Technical Product Management to define engagement cadence and drive clear communication and collaboration with operating partners to act as one and scale operations across the globe. Translate partner agreement into clear, sequenced product requirements for cross-functional teams.
  • Cross-Functional Influence: Drive alignment across Rivian, RVT, and partner engineering teams to maximize impact of engineering work, making tradeoffs as appropriate to maximize impact and chances of success in the market. Ensure that Personal L4 product teams are engaged to develop future consumer L4 features in parallel.
  • Rider Experience: Define and maintain the Robotaxi Rider Experience Product roadmap across all in-vehicle software domains, aligned to partnership milestones and Rivian engineering cycles. Own the definition and tracking of launch criteria for each Rider Experience software domain. Architect features that build passenger confidence through transparent communication, second-screen app experiences that blend partner and vehicle functionality, and robust safety education.
  • High-Stakes Exception Handling: Work with partners to define teleoperation integrations and help define the boundary for technical implementation and product experience with a third party operator, ensuring rider safety and support when technical or environmental variables deviate from the plan.

Qualifications
  • 10+ years of product management experience, with a focus on innovative consumer-facing products or complex platform ecosystems.
  • Extensive experience in a Staff or Lead capacity, including significant experience mentoring PMs and influencing cross-functional VP-level stakeholders.
  • Systems Expertise: Exceptional ability to navigate the intersection of hardware and software, translating technical constraints into elegant user solutions.
  • Data-Driven Storytelling: Mastery of using large-scale data to identify trends, validate hypotheses, and drive mission-critical business decisions.
  • Product Instincts: A "customer-first" mentality with a high bar for quality and a knack for simplifying inherently complex logistical challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record of launching 0-to-1 products within the Autonomous Vehicle, AI, or Automotive sectors.
  • Deep understanding of the hybrid technology/operations nature of modern mobility platforms.
  • Experience managing high-value, multi-year technical partnerships with external hardware OEMs or software firms.
  • Entrepreneurial background with experience scaling products in highly ambiguous and regulated environments.
